TDOT Plant Inspector

DescriptionHMB Professional Engineers is seeking a TDOT Plant Inspector with experience inspecting asphalt production and ensuring compliance with Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) specifications.

Key Responsibilities- Inspect asphalt plant operations to ensure compliance with TDOT specifications, quality standards, and approved mix designs
- Perform sampling and testing of hot mix asphalt (HMA), aggregates, and other construction materials in accordance with TDOT procedures
- Monitor production processes, material proportions, temperatures, and plant operations to verify quality and consistency
- Review and maintain inspection reports, testing documentation, production records, and daily logs
- Communicate inspection findings with plant personnel, contractors, TDOT representatives, and project teams
- Identify material deficiencies or specification deviations and notify appropriate parties to facilitate corrective action
- Verify calibration and proper operation of plant equipment and testing devices
- Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, environmental regulations, and quality assurance requirements
- Coordinate with field inspectors and project staff to support successful project delivery
- Maintain accurate documentation to support material acceptance and project records
- Travel to asphalt plants and project sites as required throughout assigned regions
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related field preferred - 2+ years of experience in construction inspection, materials testing, asphalt plant inspection, or related transportation construction work
- Working knowledge of TDOT specifications, construction materials, and asphalt production processes
- Experience performing asphalt, aggregate, and construction materials sampling and testing
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and documentation skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, plant personnel, TDOT representatives, and internal project teams
- Ability to work independently in both plant and outdoor construction environments
- Maintain the physical ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and ladders, lift testing equipment, and work in varying weather conditions
- Daily travel and occasional overnight stays may be required depending on project assignments
- Valid TN Driver's License with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
