PurposeThis position helps the park identify and plan for safety and environmental issues associated with private and abandoned minerals. The Geology Assistant will support monitoring and reduction of potential impacts to natural and cultural resources.
Description of DutiesThe selected candidate will be supervised by the park’s Environmental Protection Specialist.
Duties include:
- Review and validation of existing inventory inspection sheets, photographs, and maps.
- Field projects to update existing conditions of oil and gas wells and abandoned mine features, including completing inspection forms, taking photographs, and collecting GPS locations.
- Produce final reports with inspection results, documentation of environmental conditions, photographs, maps, and recommendations for necessary actions.
Documentation of current conditions in the park related to oil and gas operations and abandoned coal mines. Updated well and mine site inspections to identify potential impacts and formulate requests for funding.
Qualifications- United States citizen, United States national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate; otherwise must obtain a high school diploma or equivalent before receiving the education award.
- Must provide eligibility information and complete a National Service Criminal History Check and a government security background check.
- Must be available for the entire 26‑week term.
Highest priority for applicants pursuing a degree in geology, minerals management, petroleum engineering or related fields; strong GPS equipment knowledge; capable of traveling on foot through rough terrain; proficient in ESRI GIS software (Arc Pro, ArcGIS Online, Collector, Survey 123).
Position SettingField work 60‑70% and office work 30‑40%. The environment includes remote locations up to several miles from the nearest road. Applicants must be able to travel on foot carrying a pack and field equipment.
HousingPark housing is NOT available; participants must find housing nearby. Average private monthly rent ranges from $600 to $1,500.
Vehicle and Driver's License Requirements- Valid driver's license to operate a government vehicle required.
