Summary
The Pipefitter plans and lays out the work to be performed on a task such as the ordering of material to install or replace piping to compressor systems for medical air and vacuum systems. The tasks assigned are more complex in nature and require a broad knowledge of equipment and systems; a broad practical knowledge of the pipe fitting and plumbing trades;
and an extensive knowledge of steam fitting.
- Applicants must provide evidence of training or experience sufficient to perform the duties, supported by detailed descriptions on the resume.
- Experience or training need not meet a specific length; it must demonstrate the scope and quality of ability.
- Volunteer work, including national service programs such as Peace Corps or Ameri Corps, counts toward qualifications.
- Full‑time experience is defined as 35‑40 hours per week; part‑time is credited based on hours actually spent.
- Applicants will be evaluated under the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
- Repair piping or associated equipment in complex systems such as domestic water systems, hydronic systems, medical/surgical gas and vacuum systems, control air systems, dental evacuation systems, centrifugal chillers, and reciprocating chillers.
- Disassemble complex devices to determine proper operation and make internal repairs to diaphragms, seats, spring actuators, and flow control devices such as back‑flow prev enters, solenoids, and fire suppression devices.
- Program computer‑operated systems such as lawn sprinkler systems, fuel oil systems, etc.
- Interpret drawings, specifications, schematics, operator and parts manuals, etc. of varying degrees of complexity for complete systems.
- Prepare requests for parts, materials, tools, and services as needed to carry out work assignments.
- Size, layout, and integrate systems associated with the operation of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).
- Use shop mathematics to determine sizing of pipes and connections required.
- Perform pipe welding on systems that operate at high pressure and high temperatures.
- Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations on contaminated drain systems associated with highly infectious and radioactive wastes.
- Troubleshoot entire steam distribution system—chilled water, heating water, dual temp, domestic water, secondary water, medical gas (nitrogen, nitrous oxide, oxygen, medical air), medical vacuum, natural gas—to determine why partial flow or no pressure exists at various points.
- Operate equipment such as threading machines, welding machines, cutting torches, auger machines, sewer cleaning machines, pipe cutting machines, ultrasonic testers, etc.

The duties require physical exertion involving lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weight, size, and shape. Physical effort includes walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Significant strain may occur from standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods. Protective clothing, equipment, and safety devices are provided.
Working ConditionsIncumbent is exposed to heat, restricted ventilation, and poor illumination in equipment rooms. Exposure to all weather conditions outdoors and varying climatic conditions in office and controlled spaces, such as excessive heat in the boiler plant. Exposure to hazardous materials may occur during work assignments.
