Summary
The Air Conditioning Equipment Operator operates the multiple‑zone air‑conditioning plant consisting of several centrifugal chillers. The tasks are complex and require a broad knowledge of equipment and systems. This position is within the Facilities Management Service.
QualificationsApplicants must meet all requirements by the closing date. Evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Candidates will first be screened against the prescribed screen‑out element; those who meet the minimum acceptable qualification are considered for further rating.
Eligibility is determined by Dexterity, Safety, Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, Interpret Instructions, Specifications, Measuring Instruments, Operation of Equipment/Machinery, and Technical Practices. Volunteer and paid experience, including National Service programs, is accepted.
- Plan and lay out work for specific tasks, including ordering materials to construct and install duct work.
- Prepare duct work diagrams and interpret drawings, specifications, schematics, operator manuals, and parts manuals.
- Calibrate and balance complex energy‑management systems to meet or exceed design criteria.
- Troubleshoot complex air‑conditioning and refrigeration systems, including unusual compressor arrangements.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections of HVAC systems and equipment, including associated fire‑alarm devices.
- Service refrigerators, centrifuges, freezers, ice machines, and other refrigeration equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair multi‑zone air‑conditioning equipment, including fans, pumps, cooling towers, and controls.
- Repair pump and compressor systems, such as primary and secondary chill‑water pumps, centrifugal and reciprocating chillers.
- Prepare requests for parts, materials, tools, and services as needed.
- Observe pre‑alarm conditions and respond to prevent damage to expensive systems.
- Maintain a Universal Refrigerant Certification and provide a legible copy of the current valid certification with the application.
Physical exertion is required, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Work may involve standing, crouching, or stooping for extended periods. The role includes both office and fieldwork.
