The salary range for these positions is $43,572 - $53,628 annually.
QualificationsEducation and Experience: High school diploma;
General Educational Development diploma.
Transportation Worker 1: Entry level; no prerequisites other than high school education or equivalent. Eligible for promotion to Transportation Worker 2 upon satisfactory review and completion of required skills and competency elements and obtaining appropriate level of Commercial Driver's License.
Transportation Worker 2: Intermediate level; must have completed required skills and competency elements of Transportation Worker
1. Eligible for promotion to Transportation Worker 3 upon satisfactory review and completion of required skills and competency elements of Transportation Worker 2.
Transportation Worker 3: Experienced level; must have completed required skills and competency elements of Transportation Worker 2.
Each level of the Transportation Worker Series is defined by a Work Element Plan that details required hours, core and elective skills, and exam and demonstration requirements for eligibility to move to the next level.
Necessary Special QualificationsMust possess and maintain a Class D driver’s license valid to operate vehicles in Tennessee. If under age 21, employees must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within eleven months (manual transmission). Code O, K, and 52 restrictions are allowable;
Code E restriction is not; testing must be completed in a manual transmission vehicle.
Some positions may require removal of the Code O restriction to operate a fifth wheel or greater than 10,001 pound trailer.
TDOT employees with Class A CDL at age 21 must maintain or obtain, at own expense and within 3 months of 21st birthday, a Class‑A CDL with N endorsement valid in Tennessee.
Non‑TDOT employees age 21+ must obtain within eleven months of hire a Class‑A CDL with N endorsement valid in Tennessee; five months from hire or promotion to obtain permits for eligibility to the specific required license. Code L restriction is not allowable; testing must be completed in a manual transmission vehicle.
Conditions of Employment- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver and safety impact positions.
- Commercial drivers and safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, variable hours outside the normal work schedule, including on‑call rotation.
- Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
The Maintenance Transportation Worker plays a vital role in ensuring TDOT's infrastructure operates efficiently, safely, and remains in good working condition. This position supports the preservation of TDOT's infrastructure and public safety by performing daily maintenance tasks and operating equipment to maintain roads and facilities.
Responsibilities include operating heavy machinery, vehicles, power equipment, and standard hand tools to support preventive maintenance, inspection, repair, and construction of roads, structures, and roadside features throughout the State's transportation system.
The role demands full accountability for task completion, safe equipment operation, and overall highway maintenance activities.
ResponsibilitiesUnder intermittent direct supervision, perform routine maintenance on TDOT infrastructure to ensure safety and operational efficiency. Tasks include identification, repair, and installation of signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
