Position Summary

The City of Murphy’s Police Department seeks to add a Telecommunications Officer to its dynamic team. As our Telecommunications Officer, under direct supervision of the Telecommunications Supervisor, you will receive and dispatch requests for police, fire, ambulance, and animal control emergency and non‑emergency services.

Responsibilities
  • Operate a multi‑line communication system.
  • Answer phones and direct callers to the appropriate city employee.
  • Monitor and broadcast on communication radio equipment.
  • Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical units and animal control as well as other city departments (public works, parks and recreation, etc.) as needed.
  • Operate various telecommunication, multi‑channel radio equipment, and the Enhanced 911 system.
  • Assign police, fire, and ambulance support elements to routine/emergency calls for service.
  • Record all activities and locations of police units and animal control units.
  • Use computer terminals to make entries and inquiries and interpret the responses from various automated databases.
  • Provide Emergency Medical Pre‑ and Post‑Arrival instructions.
  • Retrieve Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration data from the computer system.
  • Check for outstanding warrants, stolen vehicles and articles.
  • Enter and clear warrants and stolen articles from department to TCIC/NCIC computer.
  • Operate video recording, closed‑circuit television, and tape‑logging equipment.
  • Communicate with the hearing and speech‑impaired by a teletype system.
  • Screen and forward telephone calls for the Police, Fire Department, and Animal Control departments.
  • Be aware of and able to review the city’s crime analysis software (e.g., Raids On Line) and review crime trends for their respective shifts regularly.
  • Able to operate the city‑wide locking control system, setting openings and closings according to scheduled events.
  • Develop knowledge, skills, and abilities to enhance and ensure continued success and meet all mandated training requirements as specified by TCOLE for the maintenance of a licensed telecommunicator.
  • Operate computers, telephones, radios, recorders, and other technical equipment.
  • Adhere to personnel safety, departmental policies and procedures, and Administrative Orders.
Schedule Commitment

MUST ACCEPT ON‑CALL DUTY STATUS AND WORK FLEXIBLE HOURS TO INCLUDE ALL SHIFTS INCLUDING NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS.

Pay Plan

FLSA non‑exempt, budgeted on Pay Grade #28.

Min: $24.37 /hour | Mid: $27.85 /hour | Max: $32.49 /hour
