Assistant Vice President & Deputy Director of Athletics/COO

Senior executive athletics leadership role with broad operational oversight and enterprise‑wide responsibility.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Lead all operating areas of the Athletics Department, including revenue generation, fundraising, business operations, commercial and sponsorship development, fan engagement, brand management, digital strategy, communications, marketing, special events, contract management, and athletics programming.
  • Serve as liaison and meet regularly with key internal and external stakeholders, representing the department positively and advocating for university interests.
  • Collaborate with coaches, student‑athletes, university administration, and conference officials to align operational strategies with overall departmental goals.
  • Supervise personnel: allocate work, provide training, conduct performance evaluations, enforce internal procedures, resolve problems, and motivate staff for peak productivity.
  • Participate in strategic planning and critical decision‑making events; develop solutions for difficult problems.
  • Manage all contractual agreements with external vendors, operators, visiting institutions, and suppliers.
  • Lead multi‑year fiscal planning, assessing revenue and expense categories with the Director of Athletics and campus/athletics staff.
  • Maintain the Athletics department policies and procedures manual and recommend guideline changes as needed.
  • Serve as sports coordinator for one or more NCAA Division I team sports, overseeing sport budgets, personnel, NCAA/MVC compliance, and team athletic/academic performance.
  • Establish and implement departmental goals, objectives, and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate program effectiveness and implement necessary improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, policies, rules, and regulations set by the Board of Regents, university, NCAA, conference, state and federal authorities, CSC, and other governing bodies.
  • Partner with Athletics Leadership to create and execute front office and revenue share operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements
  • At least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution; higher education may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Knowledge of all operational and administrative aspects of managing NCAA Division I team sports games.
  • Understanding of NCAA and MVC rules, compliance standards, and reporting requirements.
  • Familiarity with major and minor intercollegiate athletics activities, strategic planning, and programs.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to develop and maintain record‑keeping systems and procedures.
  • Exceptional program planning and executive leadership abilities.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare reports, statements, or projections.
  • Skill in re‑engineering operations, formulating policy, and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Employee development and performance management skills.
