Inspector I, II, or III – Murray City, UT

  • $24.40 - $37.03 hourly DOE (Inspector I)
  • $28.07 - $42.59 hourly DOE (Inspector II)
  • $32.30 - $48.99 hourly DOE (Inspector III)

Department: Community & Economic Development / Building Inspection

General Description: Under general supervision from the Building Official performs technical duties in enforcing construction codes to ensure public safety and health.

Minimum Requirements

Inspector I:

  • Graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience in inspection or the construction trades, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements

Inspector I:

  • Must have a valid Utah Driver License.
  • Must be an I.C.C. certified inspector as a Commercial Building Inspector or a Residential Combination Inspector; or alternatively may be an I.C.C. certified Residential Building Inspector plus be certified within 180 days in one of the following I.C.C. categories:
    Commercial Electrical Inspector, Commercial Mechanical Inspector, Commercial Plumbing Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, Residential Mechanical Inspector, or Residential Plumbing Inspector.
  • Must be licensed with the State of Utah as a Limited Building Inspector within 60 days of employment.

Inspector II:

  • Must have a valid Utah Driver License.
  • Must be a 4-Way ICC Certified Residential Combination Dwelling Inspector or must be a 4-Way Certified Commercial Combination Inspector.
  • Must be licensed with the State of Utah as a Limited Building Inspector.

Inspector III:

  • Must have a valid Utah Driver License.
  • Must be an I.C.C. certified commercial and residential inspector in the four following fields: building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical.
  • Must be licensed with the State of Utah as a Combination Building Inspector within 60 days of employment.
Essential Duties
  • Inspects all construction work for which a building permit is required.
  • Inspects new buildings, additions to and alterations of existing buildings for compliance with the currently adopted editions of the International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code, International Energy Conservation Code, and the National Electrical Code.
  • Inspects building projects to ensure construction proceeds in accordance with plans approved with the building permit.
  • Reads and interprets adopted codes, technical manuals, drawings, instructions, and specifications as related to construction projects.
  • Clearly notifies contractor of code violations with electronic compliance reports at the time of inspection.
  • Works with the public at the permit counter and on the phone to answer code questions and assists in resolving problems.
  • Checks that all required special inspections are performed and reviewed for completeness.
  • Reviews testing data and reports for conformance to specifications.
  • Works with computer, iPad or other electronic devices to schedule inspections and updates computer with results of inspections perform ed.
  • Follows up to verify correction for violations are made and takes appropriate action to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews non-complex plans for code compliance.
  • Evaluates existing buildings, on a complaint basis, for hazardous conditions and initiates abatements procedures per the currently adopted Uniform Code for the Abatement of Dangerous Buildings when warranted.
  • Studies technical literature and attends meetings to keep current on applicable codes and code changes as they occur.
  • Assists in training of new inspectors during their probationary period.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work schedule will be arranged with the employer.
