Position Summary

The APRN will conduct psychiatric assessments; assess physical health needs, and make appropriate referrals to community physicians; provide management and administration of medication in conjunction with the psychiatrist; and provide a range of treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for individuals with severe mental health disorders and co-occurring conditions include substance use disorder.

Essential Duties
  • Conduct psychiatric assessments including psychiatric history (e.g., onset, course and effect of illness, past treatment and responses, and risk behaviors), mental status, and diagnoses; use of drugs or alcohol; education and employment; social development and functioning; activities of daily living; family structure and relationships; and physical health, coordinate care and make referrals to primary care and specialty medical providers as indicated.
  • Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications in accordance with evidence-based practices. Conduct ongoing assessments of therapeutic response, side effects, medication adherence, and overall clinical stability.
  • Assess and treat co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, including the prescribing and management of medications for addiction treatment (MAT) (e.g., buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other evidence-based pharmacotherapies). Monitor effectiveness, adherence, and potential interactions with psychotropic medications, and coordinate care with the interdisciplinary team to support integrated dual-diagnosis treatment.
  • Be actively involved in both acute and long-term psychiatric inpatient treatment of clients. Collaborate with the mental health program team and take a lead role in coordinating and providing the team’s medication administration services.
  • Lead and/or actively participate in treatment planning, including initial treatment plans, ongoing reviews, and discharge planning. Ensure psychiatric input is incorporated into individualized care plans, including step-down and transition planning. Educate clients and non-medical staff on medications and their side effects.
  • Complete documentation and insurance authorizations on a timely basis.
  • Provide on-call psychiatric coverage and crisis intervention services as required, including assessment and management of psychiatric emergencies.
  • Attend work on a regular and predictable basis.
Non-Essential Duties
  • Maintain all continuing education requirements in order to maintain professional level and status.
  • Maintain good professional relationships with appropriate community figures, referral sources, and other professionals.
  • Maintain and enhance professional skills and knowledge through attending conferences/ workshops/courses and reading professional materials that are relevant to job requirements and approved by the Program Director.
