The Intermountain Health Organ Procurement and Perfusion (IHOPP) Nurse is a highly specialized RN Clinical Expanded Role II within the Intermountain Transplant Program, providing expert clinical, surgical, and research support in transplant surgery. As a service-line specialist in deceased donor organ recovery, machine perfusion, and organ preservation, this role supports outcome optimization, implementation of innovative technology, quality improvement, and research initiatives within the transplant specialty.

Under the supervision of the Organ Procurement and Perfusion Nursing Supervisor, the IHOPP Nurse participates in organ recovery procedures and manages post-recovery machine preservation of transplantable organs. Responsibilities include machine setup and calibration, vessel cannulation, point-of-care testing, continuous organ monitoring, and administration of preservation therapies or medications according to established protocols in collaboration with the recovering transplant surgeon to optimize organ viability and transplant outcomes.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinates organ recovery activities, including mobilizing the IHOPP team, securing necessary supplies, arranging transportation, and ensuring required recipient cross match testing and laboratory coordination
  • Serves as the primary liaison throughout donor recovery, coordinating case logistics and providing timely clinical updates to transplant surgeons, implanting centers, and other stakeholders
  • Prepares and supports donor operating room activities, including organ recovery, labeling, packaging, and transportation in compliance with OPTN/UNOS policies and regulatory requirements
  • Sets up, calibrates, operates, monitors, and troubleshoots hypothermic and normothermic machine perfusion and preservation devices, with oversight up until implantation, including organ transport when required
  • Performs medication reconstitution and administration, point‑of‑care testing, lab interpretation, and organ viability assessments related to machine perfusion in accordance with established protocol.
  • Provides real‑time clinical updates and recommendations to transplant surgeons regarding organ status and readiness for implantation.
  • Maintains compliance with OPTN, UNOS, CMS, and Intermountain Health regulations, policies, and protocols.
  • Provides subject matter expertise in organ preservation and perfusion, support policy and protocol development, participate in research initiatives, and promote the integration of evidence‑based practices to improve transplant outcomes
