Spanish Medical Interpreter

Coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services.

Schedule and Shift: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, 9 AM – 5:30 PM (Part‑time – 24 hours per week).

Location: Intermountain Medical Center, Murray, Utah.

• Interpret medical and general information in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight‑translation modes for patients, families, and staff with a high degree of accuracy and completeness.
• Demonstrate expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system; act as a cultural mediator with cultural sensitivity.
• Render unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information within the appropriate cultural context.
• Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters; demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA, Title

  III of the ADA, and Section
  1557 of the Affordable Care Act.
• Manage time productively, respond to requests promptly and provide staff with estimated time of arrival for assignments.
• Refer staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
• Use computer, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry, and other communication purposes.
• Maintain accurate and complete records of all interpretation events; keep data across platforms consistent and accurate.
• Translate written material into one or more languages, ensuring meaning, context, and localization are maintained.
• Complete assignments in a timely manner and with high accuracy.

• Successful completion of a pre‑hire skills assessment.
• Excellent oral and written command of source and target language(s) (Professional Proficiency or Level3 on the ILR scale).
• Demonstrated ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with high accuracy.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment.
• Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills; able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Certificate of completion from a 40‑hour Professional Medical Interpreter course, or one of the following:
  • Interpretation certification in a different field (e.g., court).
  • A college degree in translation or a working language.
  • Two years of experience as a professional interpreter.
• Proficiency with EPIC (preferred).

• Two years experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings.
• Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Translation, Languages, or Communications.
• National certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter (CCHI or NBCMI); in Utah, State Certified Medical Language Interpreter license by DOPL.
• Completion of a college‑level medical terminology course.

$21.70 – $31.90 per hour, determined by direct professional interpreting experience.
