Job Description
Coordinates and delivers both interpretation (oral) and translation (written) services for individuals with limited English proficiency across all Intermountain Health facilities and virtual services.

Schedule and ShiftVariable shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends). This is a PRN/As needed position, so no guaranteed hours.
Essential Functions- Interpret medical and general information with the highest accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes for patients, families, and staff, using appropriate communication methods per developmental age and mental condition.
- Interpret complex medical information, demonstrating expert knowledge of medical terminology and the healthcare system.
- Act as a cultural mediator, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and superior intercultural communication skills.
- Render unbiased interpretation to ensure accurate exchange of information in the proper cultural context.
- Adhere to the National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Healthcare Interpreters; demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
- Manage time productively, respond to requests timely, and provide staff with an estimated time of arrival for interpretation assignments.
- Refer staff to phone or video interpretation per guidelines.
- Use computers, software, and electronic tools for research, data entry, and other communication purposes; maintain accurate and complete records of all interpretation events across multiple platforms.

Pay Range: $22.98 – $35.00, determined based on direct professional interpreting experience.

Relevant LocationsIntermountain Medical Center, Riverton Hospital, Alta View Hospital and other locations in the SLC Valley.
Required Qualifications- Successful completion of a pre‑hire skills assessment.
- Excellent oral and written command of both source and target languages; “Professional Proficiency” or Level3 on the ILR scale (or equivalent).
- Perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with high accuracy in both languages.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, high‑pressure environment.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi‑task.
- Demonstrated interpersonal verbal and written communication skills and ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
- Certificate of completion from a 40‑hour Professional Medical Interpreter course.
- If the above course is not completed, consider candidates who hold an interpreting certification in another field, a college degree in translation or a working language, or have at least two years of professional interpreter experience.
- Two years of experience working as an interpreter in healthcare settings.
- Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Translation, Languages, or Communications.
- National certification as a Healthcare or Medical Interpreter from CCHI or NBCMI; in Utah, State Certified Medical Language Interpreter License from DOPL.
- Completion of a college‑level medical terminology course.
- Knowledge of EPIC.
- Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent verbal communication with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients, and visitors requiring quick, accurate understanding.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers for manipulating delicate supplies and equipment with precision.
- Frequent computer use for typing and accessing information.
- For driving roles: must be able to drive a vehicle, which requires sitting, seeing, reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
