38-40 hours per week

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:Prepare pets for surgical procedures.

Able to handledogs,catsand rabbits.

Safely and humanely restrains pets for pre-sedation, anesthesia or any other miscellaneous veterinary services provided by the Humane Society of Utah.

Monitor patient and anesthesia in O.R. andassistveterinarians.

Recover pets after surgery. Educates clients. Provides excellent customer service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Helps with check-inprocedurefor surgery animals.
  • Answersclientsquestions and instructs on proper pet care and surgery or vaccine related questions.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.
  • Safely andhumanelyrestrain pets for services and procedures.
  • Must be able to lift 50-70 lbs. With or without assistance.
  • Handles all animals in a professional,humaneand safe manner.
  • Shave, andscrub animals for various surgical procedures.
  • Properlymonitoranimalsbreathing and SPo2 monitors.
  • Properly connect and disconnect animals from anesthesia machines.
  • Help lift animals onto surgery tables.
  • Open surgical packs with sterility.
  • Change anesthesiamachinestubes and breathing bags according to weight for all animals.
  • Monitor anesthesia duringsurgery, and understand anesthesia machines and how to usethe isofluraneand oxygen levels.
  • Keep supplies stocked in all areas.
  • Help take animalsoff oftables after surgery.
  • Take temperatures and heart rates and be able to recognize when there is a problem.
  • Give anyafter surgerymedications/injections.
  • Scan and place microchips.
  • Nail trims, anal glands, blood draws.
  • Constantlymonitorbreathing in anesthetized patients.
  • Extubate animals as they wake up.
  • Make sure pets have fittingecollars.
  • Make sure pet collars and cage/kennel card match before returning them to their kennels.
  • Monitors kennels of recovering client and shelter animals and cleans up urine,vomitand feces.
  • Washes and folds laundry.
  • Keeps work areas clean and organized at all times.
  • Dental charting,xrays, and scale and polishing teeth.
  • Rotating cleaning schedule for OR, mopping/laundry,garbages, kennels, etc.
  • Completes all weekly and monthly cleaning assignments.
  • Receives and properly stores ordered supplies.
  • Cross training in multiple departments throughout the organization.
  • Completes other duties as may be assigned by lead tech, manager, medicaldirectoror any staff Veterinarian.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Some veterinary technician experience is preferred. Must be available Monday through Saturday 7:00AM to 6:00PM. Ability to work Monday-Saturday is required.

Occasionally, some overtime may be required. Schedules are subject to change based on department needs.

Must be able to work with dogs, cats,rabbitsand other miscellaneous small pets.

Must be able to understand and strictly follow verbal and written directions from Staff Veterinarians and the Medical Director.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the essential functions of this job, veterinary techareregularlyrequiredto lift 50-75lbsrepeatedly throughout thework dayand must be able to safely and properly restrain large and/or fractious animals.

Technicians are regularly required tokneel, bend, twist, stand and walk forlong periods, and converse with clients to explain procedures and service schedules.

The technicians are required to regularly perform repetitive wrist,handand finger movement.

The veterinary technician is regularly required totalk, feel the attributes of objects, grasp, push, and reach with arms and hands.
