Position: Special Education Aide (6.25 hrs/day) (2 positions available)

Job Description

Muscatine Schools is hiring a Special Education Aide for Franklin Elementary. Special Education Aides work nine months per school year while school is in session. The position is scheduled for 6.25 hours per day (6 hours 15 minutes), Monday through Friday, approximate schedule 7:45 am–2:15 pm. Starting pay is $17.93 per hour. Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.

Responsibilities

Under direction of professional staff, supervise and assist students individually or in group settings.

Duties include:

  • Responsible for students with academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • May work one-to-one with students to complete assigned tasks.
  • Support data collection systems under teacher directions.
  • Assist in restroom or personal hygiene when needed.
  • Maintain regular attendance to ensure consistency with students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Bilingual preferred or highly desirable.
  • Must complete required training (Chapter 103 Training, Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention Training) offered by the district. Failure to complete training renders the employee ineligible for the position.
  • Some positions may require a valid driver’s license as the role involves community mobility.
  • Physical capacity to assist physically challenged students, including lifting as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency at appropriate skill level.
  • Experience working with challenged students.
  • Self‑starter; helps students become more self‑sufficient and successful.
  • Physically able to help students and assist with small group drills, remediation or one‑on‑one tutoring.
  • Proficient in student equipment including computer, wheelchair, health, mobilizer, immobilizer.
  • Knowledge of building and school bus safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of building and school alarm systems.
  • Genuinely likes children and enjoys working with young people.
  • Able to remain calm in presence of occasional bad language, threat of physical violence or personal habits of students.
  • Patience and willingness to assume responsibility.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information.
  • Ability to work well with others.
Physical Demands

The employee must be capable of working under stress with large numbers of students, parents and co‑workers. Tasks frequently require standing, walking, using hands and fingers to handle tools, talking and hearing. The employee may squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head or forward up to 36 inches, use hand strength to grasp items, bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than average.

The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds at a time, 0 to 12 ft and occasionally up to 20 ft, push or pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

Working Environment

The work environment is usually quiet indoor temperatures; the employee may work outdoors supervising students outside of the classroom. The position requires professional working hours that may extend beyond a typical 8:00 am–4:00 pm workday. The employee will frequently work in different areas of the classroom including desks, at the floor, standing, and moving while supervising indoor and outdoor activities.

Evaluation

Principal shall evaluate the employee no less than once annually with input from the teacher.
