Position

Summary

The Material Handler is responsible for loading, unloading, moving, and handling materials and containers throughout the facility while supporting production, shipping, and storage operations. This position operates forklifts and other material handling equipment, performs chlorine filling and hydrostatic testing activities, supports bleach production, and assists with hazardous waste management and emergency response activities. The Material Handler maintains accurate production and waste records and helps ensure safe, efficient plant operations in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Load, unload, transport, and store materials and products throughout the facility.
  • Operate forklifts, industrial trucks, hoists, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Load and unload trucks, including tank trucks.
  • Read and interpret work orders and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Move materials from storage and work areas to designated locations.
  • Perform chlorine filling operations and hydrostatic testing of chlorine cylinders.
  • Support bleach production processes.
  • Respond to chlorine-related emergencies in accordance with site emergency response procedures.
  • Assist with hazardous waste handling, storage, inspections, documentation, and spill response activities.
  • Prepare and maintain hazardous waste records, including manifests, inspection logs, waste determinations, and other required reports.
  • Count, weigh, and record materials handled and production activity.
  • Lift and move materials manually or with mechanical equipment.
  • Clean work areas, machinery, and equipment to maintain a safe and organized facility.
  • Perform basic equipment adjustments and minor repairs, such as realigning belts and replacing rollers.
  • Comply with all safety, environmental, and operating procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
Qualifications
  • Required High school diploma, GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three months of related manufacturing, warehouse, plant operations, or material handling experience.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and other material handling equipment, or ability to obtain required certification.
  • Ability to read and understand safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance procedures, and work orders.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, percentages, and measurements.
  • Ability to follow written, verbal, and diagram-based instructions.
  • Strong attention to safety and ability to work with hazardous materials and chemicals in accordance with established procedures.
  • Preferred Previous experience in chemical manufacturing, distribution, or industrial operations.
  • Experience handling hazardous materials or hazardous waste.
  • Experience with chlorine filling operations, hydrostatic testing, or bleach production.
  • Emergency response training or experience.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and experience performing minor equipment repairs or adjustments.
Work Environment

Work is performed in a manufacturing and industrial plant environment. Regular exposure to moving mechanical equipment and machinery. Frequent work outdoors and in varying weather conditions. Frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles, hazardous materials, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasional work at heights and exposure to vibration and electrical hazards. Requires adherence to all safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Noise levels are typically loud.

Physical Requirements

Frequent standing, walking, speaking, and hearing. Occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Ability to safely work in an active industrial environment while wearing required PPE.
