This position is a 185 work day position offering full family medical, dental, and vision benefits. Dental, vision, and life insurance are paid by the district at no cost to the employee. Personal business days and sick time paid. Negotiated long term disability, paid by the district up to $30 per month. Retirement through the Office of Retirement Services (Pension Plus or Defined Contribution).

This position is on the Center based Professional Scale - $53828.00-81984.00 (BA scale, lanes for BA+20, MA, MA+30, and MA+60 available) per year depending on experience and education.

General Job Function

The Special Education Homebound/Hospitalized Teacher provides direct instructional services to students with disabilities who are medically unable to attend school. The H/H teacher acts as the vital instructional link between the student’s medical confinement (home or hospital) and the school, ensuring the student maintains educational continuity, accesses their curriculum, and progresses toward their IEP goals. Teachers provide direct instructional programming for students, manage classroom activities, manage student behaviors, integrate classroom instruction with other therapeutic services and supervise classroom instructional assistant(s).

Minimum Qualifications
  • No physical or mental restrictions that would, with reasonable accommodation, prevent performance of the essential job functions and responsibilities.
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree or greater, with certification in special education.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan teaching certificate.
  • A working knowledge of current practices and trends in the education of developmentally disabled students.
  • An ability to supervise and manage the implementation of programs/services developed for students.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • A working knowledge of the dynamics of human learning and communications development.
  • Some practical experience in vocational training and or job coach certification.
  • 3-5 years secondary teaching experience.
  • Essential Job Functions
  • Performs regular functional assessment of students interests and abilities.
  • Develops daily instructional plans to remedy deficits determined by assessment through evaluation and monitoring of students' independence and employment goals.
  • Maintains accurate and legally adequate data keeping systems and student records.
  • Manages overall classroom activities.
  • Makes referrals for other specialized therapeutic and support services.
  • Strong knowledge of community agencies to support students post-secondary goals.
  • Ability to collaborate with the LEA to ensure the coordination of services to meet the student's transition goals.
  • Has the ability to develop relationships with employers in the community and are able to advocate for the employment of individuals with disabilities.
  • Supervises and evaluates assigned instructional assistants; provides training and support and schedules their activities.
  • Remains alert to signs of health, behavior or other problems potentially injurious or detrimental to the students. Reports problems to the proper authorities.
  • Attends meetings and conferences as required as well as builds relationships with the host district to ensure that the program adheres to the host district's policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a positive relationship with parents, guardians and other caregivers.
  • Implements positive behavior supports within the classroom.
  • Upholds the Code of Conduct for Wesley School staff.
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Program Principal.

    Typical Work Environment

    Travel to and from local instructional sites and to meetings and conferences throughout the state is required.
