West Michigan Symphony (WMS) is an anchor cultural organization based in downtown Muskegon, MI, and the largest performing arts organization on the West Shore. As the resident performing group at the historic Frauenthal Theater, WMS presents an eight-concert subscription season featuring classical and pops programs led by Music Director Scott Speck. The organization also operates The Block, an intimate listening room that hosts around 15 performance events annually, ranging from jazz to classical and other genres.
Through concerts and Community Music Encounters learning events, WMS reaches approximately 16,500 people each year—over 30% of whom are children and students—from Muskegon and surrounding counties. Its mission emphasizes artistic excellence, community engagement, and accessible musical experiences in inclusive, inspirational spaces.
The Part Time String Teaching Artist position is an on-site role located in Muskegon, MI, focused on providing high-quality string instruction to students in Muskegon Public Schools in a safe and engaging after‑school setting. Day‑to‑day responsibilities include planning and delivering engaging lessons for individual and group string classes, supporting curriculum goals aligned with West Michigan Symphony’s educational initiatives, and collaborating with WMS staff and partner schools or programs.
The Teaching Artist will demonstrate and model strong technique on their primary string instrument, guide students in developing musical skills, and foster a positive, inclusive learning environment. Additional tasks may include preparing materials for Community Music Encounters, assisting with student performances, maintaining clear communication with the program manager, and participating in occasional outreach or special events as needed.
- Candidates should possess strong Teaching and Education skills, with experience working with students of diverse ages and backgrounds.
- Candidates should possess Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development skills to design structured, goal‑oriented string instruction.
- Candidates should possess clear and professional Communication skills, including the ability to give constructive feedback and collaborate with colleagues.
- Proficiency on a bowed string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) with solid technique and musicianship; ensemble or orchestral experience is beneficial.
- Background or coursework in music education, performance, or a related field; current enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program is preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and creating a welcoming environment for learners from varied communities.
- Strong organizational skills, reliability in attendance, and the ability to manage time effectively in a part‑time internship role.
- Interest in community engagement and a desire to support West Michigan Symphony’s mission through educational and outreach activities.
