Position: Urban Forester (Open/Competitive)

Job Overview

Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, or Superintendent, performs semi‑skilled and skilled construction, maintenance, and repair activities related to City facilities, grounds, and equipment. Operates light and heavy equipment and provides general labor in support of public works maintenance, repair and construction projects including highway, traffic, forestry, cemetery, marina, parks and water/sewer.

Responsibilities

Works onsite at various locations within the City; frequently travels to field sites with treacherous terrain, climbs or crawls to access sites, and may encounter fumes, dust, chemicals or other hazards. Manages safety and maintenance of equipment, operates hand and power tools, lifts moderate to heavy weight, and communicates via phone and two‑way radio. Occasionally exposed to adverse weather, loud noises, moving mechanical parts, dust or airborne particles, and fumes.

Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in construction, mechanics, a skilled trade or related field is highly preferred.
  • Two or more years of responsible job experience in building maintenance, construction, repair, tree removal, and one year of experience in mechanics, heavy equipment operation, or a related field.
  • State of Michigan Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class A and the appropriate endorsements obtained before completing probation, a satisfactory driving record, and ability to maintain one throughout employment.
  • Certification in electrical hazard and line clearance arborist required within six months of employment.
