* Provides appropriate nursing interventions, consistent with the Plan of Care and standards of practice, incorporating the Physician's prescribed medical plans of care.
* Plans individualized nursing care to meet the holistic age specific needs of the Operating Room (OR) patients.
* Assesses needs of Operating Room (OR) patients as assigned based on data collected through history, observation, physical examination, and analysis of diagnostic data.
* Delegates, supervises, and evaluates the activities of other team members while simultaneously executing immediate directives and interventions in urgent or emergent situations.
* Prepares Operating Room for patient and procedure;
Positions and prepares the patient for the surgical procedure on the Operating Room table.
* Initiates and maintains the surgical count for the procedure;
Performs Time Out;
Completes verification of Safe Surgery checklist.
* Demonstrates competency in, but not limited to, the following in the OR (refer to McLeod Health Nursing Competencies A, B, and
C):
* Following all new hire expectations for, but not limited to, the Operating Room.
* Following unit expectations around scheduling.
* Completing Procedural Paperwork Reviews - Consent, H&P, Preprocedural checklist, and Rite Site sheet
* Emergency Management - Fire Safety, Code Red in the OR, Evacuation Process, Environment of Care, Hazardous Materials/Safety Data Sheets, Emergency Codes, Security Alerts, and Survey Readiness.
* Utilizing and performing Code Management - Crash Cart/Code in the OR;
Malignant Hyperthermia in the OR.
* Administering Blood and Blood products in accordance to policies and procedures.
* Carrying out Physician's Orders.
* Utilizing the Electronic Medical Record (EMR);
Completes Intraoperative Documentation.
* Nursing Handoff in Care/Bedside Report.
* Maintaining Patient Privacy with the Patient Record/Patient Information.
* Patient Satisfaction Initiatives - Communication with patient's family during surgery.
* Providing Patient Education regarding Anesthesia, local sedation, or conscious sedation.
* Utilizes Downtime Toolkit when applicable.
* Performs Waived Testing in accordance to policies and procedures.
* Applying and Documenting Patient Restraints.
* Utilizes standard work in caring for central lines, foley catheters, pressure ulcers, ventilators, restraints, and patients at risk for falls.
* Participates in the quality improvement standards/initiatives in the OR:
* Performing Preventative care for Hospital Acquired Conditions, including but not limited to:
Surgical Site Infections (SSIs), Falls, CAUTI, and CLABSI.
* Performing Patient Safety Initiatives
* Utilizing Process Improvement for Department Initiatives
* Utilizing Infection Control Precautions and Surgical Site Infection Reduction tactics.
* Utilizes appropriate health and safety equipment to protect both patient and staff.
* Uses standard precautions and appropriate personal protective equipment when working around or handling hazardous substances, including blood or bodily fluids.
* Contributes to the daily efficient performance of the Operating Room, assists as charge nurse when assigned. (Advanced Resuscitative Certification appropriate to their patient population if serving as a Charge Nurse).
* Contributes to the overall performance of the Operating Room through the precepting of novice employees.
* Facilitates the learning experience of student nurses/surgical techs, externs, staff and volunteers.
* Participates in orientation of new staff and externs.
* Contributes to the growth and performance of the Operating Room through hospital-system initiatives cultivating nursing involved Evidenced Based Practices.
* Accepts accountability for education provided pertaining to policies, procedures, practice, and general patient care information, etc.
* Demonstrates continued professional growth through setting goals and participating in educational offerings and in-service training.
* Advances personal professional growth through participation in educational programs, current literature, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
* Integrates cost effective measures and waste reduction into practice.
* Serves as a communication liaison to family and members of the operating team.
* Delegates tasks to appropriate caregiver as defined in scope of practice.
* Demonstrates ability to act as a clinical role model to other staff members regarding appropriate patient care and use of specialized equipment.
* Functions in a leadership role by creating a positive work flow, problem solving, promoting positive customer satisfaction, and mentoring staff. Demonstrates ability to manage unit as a charge nurse in the absence of the Surgical Services Clinical Coordinator or Patient Care Supervisor.
* Collaborates with the surgeon and the surgical team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient.
