SUMMARY JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a professional position responsible for the daily planning and teaching activities of children enrolled in the Early Childhood Laboratory (ECHL). Responsible for developing and executing a daily class schedule for own classroom; planning and implementing learning center activities, group experiences, and directed learning experiences; evaluating individual child’s performance of activities and recommending promotion; developing programs for students with special educational needs;

cooperatively supervising the assistant teacher; and supervising university students working in the classroom. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies, child development, family studies, or a related field is required. Must meet continuing education requirements of 24 hours per year and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications while employed. One year of experience working with young children or one semester of clinical practice experience is required. Two years of classroom teaching experience in pre-kindergarten and/or primary grades is preferred.

CPR and First Aid certifications are required within 90 days of employment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares classroom for daily activities.
  • Develops and implements learning center activities, group experiences, and directed learning experiences.
  • Assesses children on an ongoing basis.
  • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians concerning child development and behavior.
  • Uses the electronic communication, learning, and attendance technology effectively on a daily basis.
  • Assists in determining child placement and promotion.
  • Develops programs for ECHL students with special educational needs.
  • Schedules and conducts parent/guardian conferences.
  • Plans and participates in parent/guardian involvement programs.
  • Supervises and evaluates university student workers.
  • Reports university student workers’ performance to SFA faculty, as needed.
  • Supervises assigned staff and coordinates the collaborative duties and responsibilities related to caring for and teaching children.
  • Maintains a safe physical classroom and outdoor play space and reports any hazards.
  • Maintains classroom and outdoor environments in compliance with child licensing and accreditation guidelines.
  • Participates in ECHL related activities and special events.
  • NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to productively supervise and collaboratively plan and implement instruction and child care with the assistant teacher.

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications.
