Position Overview
The Department of Biology at Stephen
F. Austin State University welcomes applications for two tenure‑track Assistant Professor positions. Candidates will integrate into a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that fosters research and education across concentrations in cellular and molecular biology; conservation, ecology and evolution; and aquatic biology (freshwater and marine). Ideal candidates will be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and will be expected to develop a research program and engage students in research.
- Ph.D. in Biology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment (ABD candidates may be considered if Ph.D. is earned prior to start date).
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
- Ability to develop a productive research program.
- Ability to effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Postdoctoral research experience.
- Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential for securing external funding.
- Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research and teach across concentrations.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise and foundational biology courses.
- Establish and maintain an independent research program.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
- Provide service to department, college, and the university.
- Perform an equivalent of twenty-four teaching load credits (TLC) for the combined fall and spring semesters.
- Engage in research, scholarship, and service activities appropriate to faculty rank and departmental tenure/merit criteria.
- Provide services to the university and the profession.
- Participate in promotion review of lower‑ranked faculty members within the department.
- When tenured, participate in tenure review of candidates for tenure.
- May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, advising, and thesis/dissertation supervision.
- May receive course load reassignment when assigned administrative duties in support of the department/college/university or to prepare course material during the first semester/year.
- May receive course load reassignment when approved to conduct research or service that exceeds normal expectations.
- May supervise the work of student and/or graduate assistants.
- May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Extensive knowledge in the field in which the individual will be teaching.
- Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.
- Commitment to conduct research and/or scholarly or creative accomplishments and service.
- Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Patience and effective interaction with students.
Candidates requiring H1B sponsorship are not eligible for the position following the current mandated freeze on H1B sponsorship at public institutions by the State of Texas.
