Position: Assistant or Associate Provost - Academic Administration (Office of the Provost)

SUMMARY JOB DESCRIPTION

This is an executive position responsible for assisting the provost/executive vice president for academic affairs in accomplishing the goals of the university’s academic mission by assisting with assigned operations of university academic affairs. Responsible for providing administrative oversight and leadership in academic planning, program implementation, curriculum, compliance, and the application of new technologies to the teaching and learning process. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Terminal degree in an academic discipline tenurable within the university is required.

Five years of related experience as a faculty member at a four-year, higher education institution is required. Must have qualifications to warrant a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in one of the disciplines within the university is required. Documented success in designing and leading new initiatives or programs to advance the mission of an academic department, college, or a campus-wide research center is required.

Experience promoting excellence in comprehensive programs and graduate and/or undergraduate student education is required. Experience supporting curricular, policy, or accreditation report work is required. Experience servicing on committees related to curriculum, policy development, and/or accreditation work is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provides leadership direction, operational management, and supervision for reporting units by ensuring activities align and serve institutional curriculum, assessment, policy, accreditation, and compliance priorities.
  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Approves, monitors, and advises as needed on unit-level budgets, ensuring proper fiscal management.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements in-service professional development that promotes employee, organizational, and institutional goals for managing the academic portfolio, curriculum processes, policy and compliance goals, and institutional accreditation.
  • Develops new or enhances existing curriculum and academic portfolio management activities.
  • Ensures curricular enhancements are fully vetted by stakeholders, reported to appropriate external entities, including but not limited to THECB and SACSOC, and united with the application and admissions processes.
  • Provides strategic guidance to staff, faculty, and administrators involved in curriculum and academic portfolio management processes, accreditation processes, and policy and compliance processes within the division.
  • NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • May serve on campus committees.
  • May represent the administrative unit and the university at institutional and public functions.
  • May participate in professional development related to leadership, curriculum, policy, and accreditation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and maintenance best practices and trends in higher education.
  • Knowledge of best practices related to policy development, review, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of factors that influence accreditation and reauthorization efforts.
  • Knowledge of curriculum design related to higher education.
  • Skill in using computer applications, including spreadsheets, database, and word processing software.
  • Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
  • Skill in developing policies and compliance practices and procedures.
  • Skill in using data to draft accreditation reports.
  • Ability to understand and explain key concepts related to higher education such as curriculum, policy, compliance, and accreditation.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize, prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.
  • Ability to build a team and develop consensus around ideas and initiatives.
  • Ability to lead larger groups of staff and students.
  • Ability to train and supervise others.
