The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of a growing utility construction company by maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with job costing, and ensuring timely reporting. This role plays a key part in tracking project performance, managing construction-related transactions, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of accounting principles and an interest in the unique financial processes associated with construction, including work-in-progress (WIP), project costing, and equipment tracking.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:General Accounting
- Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes
- Maintain general ledger accuracy and integrity
- Support financial statement preparation and internal reporting
- Assist with job cost tracking across multiple projects and divisions
- Support work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, including analysis of over/under billings
- Reconcile project costs, labor, equipment usage, and subcontractor expenses
- Partner with operations and project managers to ensure accurate project financials
- Review vendor invoices for proper coding to jobs, cost codes, and departments
- Assist with subcontractor and vendor payment processing
- Support customer billing processes, including progress billing and change orders
- Help monitor aging reports and follow up on outstanding receivables
- Assist with tracking company-owned equipment costs and depreciation
- Support fuel, maintenance, and utilization reporting
- Maintain fixed asset records and schedules
- Support audits, year-end tax preparation, and external reporting requirements
- Assist with lien waivers, subcontractor compliance, and documentation as needed
- Ensure accounting practices align with GAAP and internal policies
- Help identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows and reporting accuracy
- Support implementation or optimization of accounting and project management systems
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

- Clear communication skills to collaborate with field and operations teams.
- High level of integrity and ability to handle confidential financial information.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 2+ years of accounting experience (construction or project-based industry preferred)
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and reconciliations
- Ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn new software and systems.
- Proficient knowledge and skills with Microsoft Office (primarily with Excel).
- Familiarity with ERP or accounting systems (i.e., Acumatica)
- Experience with construction accounting, job costing, or WIP reporting.
- Knowledge of equipment or fleet cost tracking
- Desire to continue to grow through continuing training.
This position operates in an office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
This is a largely sedentary position; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary. This position requires use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, talk, or hear. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
