Position OverviewThe Asphalt Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in asphalt paving and construction projects. This role ensures quality workmanship, productivity, and compliance with safety standards while working as part of a paving crew.
Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)- Operate heavy equipment such as asphalt pavers, rollers, skid steers, loaders, and other paving equipment.
- Ensure proper placement, compaction, and finishing of asphalt materials according to specifications.
- Work closely with crew members to maintain proper grade, slope, and surface quality.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑operation equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
- Adjust equipment controls to regulate material flow, compaction pressure, and machine speed.
- Follow all safety procedures and comply with OSHA and company safety policies.
- Read and understand paving plans, grade stakes, and project specifications.
- Assist with site preparation, cleanup, and other labor duties as needed.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to supervisors.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- 1‑2 years of experience operating asphalt or construction equipment preferred.
- Experience in road construction, paving, or heavy civil projects preferred.
- Valid driver's license required (CDL may be preferred depending on role).
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes (preferred).
- Must be 18 years in age or older.
- Must pass pre‑employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
- Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co‑workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
- Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
- Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
- Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required includes face shield, safety (hard toe) shoes, and coveralls.
- Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
- Strong knowledge of asphalt paving processes and equipment operation.
- Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in a fast‑paced environment.
- Understanding of compaction, grading, and paving techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and quality control.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Good communication and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Frequent climbing, reaching, bending, and kneeling.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and vibration.
- Emphasis on occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, high places, outside weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock or burn.
- Noisy conditions may occur, typically moderate.
