Position Overview

The Asphalt Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in asphalt paving and construction projects. This position plays a key role in ensuring quality workmanship, productivity, and compliance with safety standards while working as part of a paving crew.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment such as asphalt pavers, rollers, skid steers, loaders, and other paving equipment.
  • Ensure proper placement, compaction, and finishing of asphalt materials according to specifications.
  • Work closely with crew members to maintain proper grade, slope, and surface quality.
  • Perform pre- and post-operation equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
  • Adjust equipment controls to regulate material flow, compaction pressure, and machine speed.
  • Follow all safety procedures and comply with OSHA and company safety policies.
  • Read and understand paving plans, grade stakes, and project specifications.
  • Assist with site preparation, cleanup, and other labor duties as needed.
  • Identify and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience operating asphalt or construction equipment preferred.
  • Experience in road construction, paving, or heavy civil projects preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required (CDL may be preferred depending on role).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and grade stakes (preferred).

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of asphalt paving processes and equipment operation.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of compaction, grading, and paving techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
  • Frequent climbing, reaching, bending, and kneeling.
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and vibration.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
  • The noise level in some areas of the work environment may be loud, but is typically moderate.
