SUMMARY:
Academic and college or career advising and student mentoring is an essential component of students' educational experience. Such advising and mentoring provide all students with an early opportunity to identify academic strengths, areas in need of improvement and areas of interest for the purpose of making informed choices and setting post-secondary education and career goals. The focus of academic and career planning is to help students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve academic success and to be college and career ready upon high school graduation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist HS counselors with college and career components
- Promote and assist with Advanced Opportunities program
- Assist middle schools with 8th grade four-year plans
- Coordinate with counselors to provide FAFSA information, training, and assistance
- Assist with college entrance exams (PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc)
- Identify and assist students with obtaining scholarships including student workshops, internship programs, and other activities designed to provide students needed skill and resume building in order to secure scholarships
- Identify and/or plan career fairs and coordinate student attendance
- Arrange college/university visit opportunities for students
- Develop positive relationships with parents, students, administration, and staff members
- Communicate clearly and frequently with students and parents (via phone, email, etc.)
- Complete training and/or professional development in the area of advising or mentoring
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of basic computer skills and software including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT), Power School, etc.
- Effectively work with teachers and staff to make classroom presentations or other events that include large groups
- Proctor tests
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
- Keep accurate records and maintain individual records for each student
- Attend faculty meetings as required
- Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development through such efforts as reading professional journals and other publications
- Seek assistance should emergencies arise
- Represent the school district in a positive manner
- Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
- Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSTo perform job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

- High School Diploma or GED required
- Bachelor’s Degree, required
- College Counseling Certificate, preferred
- Three (3) years relevant professional experience, preferred
- Experience at the high school level and/or post-secondary level, preferred
- Customer service experience, preferred
- Previous experience in a school setting, preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills for communicating effectively with parents/guardians, students and school staff
- Demonstrate aptitude for working with children
- Works well with students, staff, and the public
- Ability to work independently and efficiently on projects
- Excellent organizational skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel
- Proficient in general computer/web and entering/retrieving information in a database
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work under pressures and deadlines
- Maintain confidentiality of staff, students, and children
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret governmental regulations and legal documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees and/or the general public. Ability to communicate in English and Spanish is preferred.
