The primary function of this position involves performing complex and skilled technical tasks related to testing, installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of pneumatic, electronic, and electrical control and monitoring systems typically found in a wastewater treatment facility. The work is carried out under the supervision of a designated supervisor, but the employee is afforded considerable freedom to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
Due to the nature of the work, it is essential for the employee to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, fellow City employees, vendors, engineers, and the public. The main duties of this position are conducted in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Installation, calibration, repair, and maintenance of industrial process instruments and control devices, including digital and analog monitoring/control equipment, in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and site standards.
- Repair, maintain, calibrate, and verify process instrumentation including but not limited to magnetic flow meters, ultrasonic or radar level sensors, hydrostatic pressure sensors, and differential pressure sensors.
- Repair, maintain, calibrate, and verify process analyzers including but not limited to dissolved oxygen (DO), pH/ORP, total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia, nitrate, phosphorus, chlorine residual, and UV transmittance.
- Work with chemical reagents, buffers, or other chemical substances to perform instrument calibration.
- Repair, maintain, and troubleshoot a UV disinfection system including UV bulbs, ballasts, wiper systems, and power distribution systems.
- Install and repair low voltage control and signal circuits that involve analog, digital, Ethernet, or field bus protocols, as well as pneumatic and hydraulic circuits.
- Conduct preventative maintenance, as well as scheduled and emergency maintenance on instrumentation systems and their components.
- Investigate and repair circuits and devices related to combustible and harmful gas monitoring sensors.
- Repair, maintain, and calibrate mobile gas detection devices to ensure personnel safety.
- Troubleshoot and repair packaged control systems, including stand-alone level controllers and pump controllers.
- Operate a range of electronic testing equipment, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, and signal generators.
- Maintain both electronic and hard-copy service records and participate in the development of written specifications for requisitioning process instrumentation, electrical, and mechanical equipment.
- Utilize computers for logging completed work, record-keeping, and retrieving equipment data through the Asset Management System.
- Prepare reports regarding system performance, troubleshooting efforts, and regulatory compliance.
- Work closely with plant staff to schedule planned maintenance and communicate needs and expectations for unplanned maintenance and repairs.
