The Hazardous Waste Screener provides customer service to the public and screens loads for foreign objects, toxic and hazardous materials according to landfill rules and regulations. The position is under the direct supervision of the Landfill Supervisor. The duties involve outdoor work with exposure to adverse weather, landfill hazards, and odors.

• Customer Service:
  Greets the public and commercial customers, directing them to the proper dumping location; monitors customer activities for compliance with landfill rules and safety; assists customers with resolution of complaints related to landfill rules and regulations; records and notifies scale house of rejected loads.
• Inspects loads for hazardous materials and foreign objects and separates hazards according to landfill rules and regulations; checks metal cylinders for explosive gases and soil loads for contaminants; monitors burn barrels and assists in extinguishing barrel fires; witnesses burial of specialized loads as required by sheriff and police departments; cleans up oil disposal areas as necessary; relieves equipment operators as authorized.
• Performs all work duties in accordance with County and Department policies, procedures and safety practices; other duties as assigned.

• Skills and Abilities:
  
  Knowledge of county landfill rules and hazardous waste regulations; emergency response practices; safety procedures related to landfill operations; ability to follow written and oral instructions; operate landfill equipment and a two-way radio; multitask and complete tasks in a timely manner; effective communication with the public, including in sensitive situations.

  Qualifications:
  
  Successfully complete background investigation.
• Education and Experience:
  
  High school diploma or GED preferred, with specialized training in hazardous materials, chemical handling and first aid; one year of customer service experience preferred; any equivalent combination of experience may be considered.

• Clear speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate with the public in person.
• Visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comprehend written work instructions and to inspect and recognize hazardous materials and foreign objects.
• Manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to separate foreign objects, handle hazardous materials, and operate landfill equipment.
• Mobility, flexibility, strength, stamina, agility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, to lift/move up to 50 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, and work in outdoor weather conditions.
