Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Nāpuʻu Natural Resource Management (NNRM) at Puʻu Waʻawaʻa and Puʻu Anahulu, located on the island of Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $3,927/Mon.

DUTIES

Under the direction of the Nāpuʻu Natural Resource Management (NNRM) Specialist, conducts restoration, monitoring, and weed control actions in management units in the Project Area. Duties include, but are not limited to, controlling weeds (manual/chemical), plant propagule collection, seed collection, seed storage, propagation, planting, and monitoring of native Hawaiian plant species. Adapts to changing plans and communicates observations and ideas to supervisors to help develop solutions to new and ongoing challenges faced in implementing project goals.

Conducts a variety of activities associated with the NNRM within managed conservation units including
1) controlling non-native plants through chemical and mechanical means,
2) individual rare tree fencing,
3) checking and repairing conservation fences,
4) collecting and inputting technical field data. Drives project vehicles and rides in helicopters, as needed, to access field sites. Monitors native Hawaiian plants through installation of photo-points, transects, rare plant field surveys, and outplant survival monitoring in management areas. Maintains databases and completes quality control on data to prepare reports, posters, and/or oral presentations for use in symposia and conferences.

Must be willing to work occasional weekends and holidays.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in Biology, Zoology, Natural Science, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of natural resource management experience may substitute for an Associate’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience in natural resource management or closely related field.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora including threatened and endangered species and restoration techniques for native plants. Working knowledge of computers including word processing, spreadsheets, and mapping software. Working knowledge of plant propagation in a nursery or greenhouse, integrated pest management practices, and ungulate-proof fence construction and maintenance.

ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to identify native and non-native plants in Hawai‘i. Ability to use global positioning system (GPS) units and smart devices (e.g., tablets) and make maps of management work. Ability to operate power tools including weed whackers, chainsaws, and mowers. Ability to safely apply pesticides and lead pesticide application activities. Ability to take detailed field notes, collect data, and prepare reports. Good verbal and written communication skills.

Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.
