Position
WATER CROSSFLOW CONNECTION TECHNICIAN
OverviewThis position performs inspections to identify cross connections between domestic water supplies and non-potable sources in commercial and industrial properties. The work is conducted under supervision with independence in judgment and requires effective coordination with supervisors, City staff, business owners, installers, and the public. Duties are performed in office and field environments.
Responsibilities- Perform inspections on new and existing industrial and commercial properties to identify potential or existing cross connections between the domestic water supply and non-potable sources. Draw or sketch plumbing layouts to show hazard locations and backflow devices.
- Review plans and specifications to identify cross connections between domestic water and non-potable sources.
- Interpret codes and regulations related to cross connection and backflow and explain corrective actions to property owners and responsible individuals.
- Maintain accurate records and files on inspections.
- Attend meetings, conferences, and training sessions; review publications to stay current on principles, practices, and developments in assigned areas.
- Keep supervisor and others informed about work progress, potential problems, and improvement ideas.
- Respond to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Coordinate regularly with appropriate departments to enhance interdepartmental operations.
- Demonstrate punctuality and reliability in meeting performance requirements and deadlines; communicate clearly and professionally.
- Respect others and maintain professional relationships with colleagues and the public.

- Education:
High School Diploma or GED - Experience:
2+ years in maintenance, trade, construction, or related work providing knowledge and skills for water distribution systems. - Computer skills:
Proficient with standard or specialized software and able to learn new tools quickly. - Licenses &
Certifications:
Valid Idaho driver’s license;
Water Distribution I license required;
Water Distribution II license within 1 year of accepting position.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of potential contamination sources and hazards in water systems.
- Thorough knowledge of plumbing appurtenances, plumbing theory, and backflow devices.
- Knowledge of fire suppression systems in industrial/commercial settings.
- Ability to read shop drawings, system maps, plans, as-builts, and drawings.
- Ability to understand complex water flows and distinguish potable vs non-potable sources.
- Ability to trace and document water piping and flows in buildings; sketch water systems to show hazards and backflow devices.
- Ability to identify and apply appropriate backflow devices for hazards to protect the water system.
- Ability to perform duties accurately under time-sensitive deadlines.
- Effective communication, both oral and written, using technical and non-technical language.
- Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions and prepare detailed reports with findings and recommendations.
- Demonstrates integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in task performance.
Work is performed primarily in an office and field environment; inside environmental conditions apply.
