Town of Nantucket Department of Public Works Laborer - Facilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The Town of Nantucket's Department of Public Works is seeking a dependable and motivated Laborer to join our team. This is a full-time position responsible for supporting the day-to-day maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of Town facilities.

The successful candidate will perform a variety of general maintenance and facility support duties, working both independently and as part of a team to help ensure Town buildings and facilities remain safe, clean, functional, and well maintained. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and preventative maintenance of Town facilities. Assist with the general upkeep, cleanliness, and safe operation of buildings and facilities. Move, load, unload, and transport materials, equipment, furniture, supplies, and other items as needed. Perform basic repairs and maintenance, including painting, patching, carpentry, plumbing, and other general facility tasks. Operate hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.

Assist with facility projects, repairs, and maintenance activities as assigned. Follow established safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment. Sufficient manual dexterity and physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing thirty (30) pounds or less may be required. Work may require outdoor labor in inclement weather.

Starting Hourly Rate: $33.50 (new hires) – $41.67 (employees with 12 years of service with the Town of Nantucket)

The employee is responsible for the provision of semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance, construction and repair of Town property (streets, sidewalks, grounds, parks and trees) and the completion of a wide range of public works projects. The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.

The employee works under the direct supervision of the Foreman. Clear, detailed and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. The employee works as instructed and consults with the supervisor as needed on all matters not specifically covered in the guidelines or instructions. The supervisor maintains control by reviewing the work in progress or upon completion.

The employee is not responsible for the regular supervision of other town employees.

The employee does not have regular access to confidential information of the department, in accordance with the State Public Records law.

The nature of work or the operation of large, complex, or potentially dangerous equipment increases the probability that errors could be serious. Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include significant monetary losses, waste of material, and damage to buildings, equipment or personal injuries.

Well defined or detailed rules, instructions and procedures cover all aspects of work. Judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines to apply in each case.
