Position Type: Per Diem
Pay Rate: $49 per hour
Job Summary: Nantucket Public Schools is seeking qualified Substitute / Per Diem School Nurses to provide health services to students and staff on an as–needed basis. This role includes general substitute coverage across PreK–12 and student‑specific nursing coverage for students requiring access to prescribed rescue medication during the school day. The Nurse supports a safe and healthy school environment by responding to medical needs, administering medications as ordered, and promoting student wellness in accordance with district policy and Massachusetts regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct nursing care to students and staff, including first aid, medication administration, and management of acute and chronic health conditions
- Administer prescribed medications, including rescue medications, in accordance with physician orders, district protocols, and individual health plans
- Implement and follow Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Emergency Action Plans as applicable
- Assess and respond to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies
- Monitor student health status and respond appropriately to emergent situations
- Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with state and district requirements
- Communicate with parents or guardians regarding student health concerns as appropriate
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and staff to support student safety and well‑being
- Adhere to all district, DESE, and Department of Public Health and safety regulations
- Valid Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Current CPR/AED certification required
- Experience in pediatrics, school, community health, or emergency nursing preferred
- Experience administering emergencies or rescue medications preferred
- Strong communication, organizational, and clinical judgment skills
- Ability to work effectively in a school environment and respond calmly and professionally to health‑related situations
- At least 3 years of relevant experience preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
- Successful completion of CORI/SORI background checks
- Compliance with all district employment requirements
- Potential for after‑school extracurricular activities (evenings, weekends, field trips, travel)
