The Department of Public Works seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Maintenance Technician. Under the direction of the Central Fleet Manager, the successful applicant should be able to perform a wide range of skilled work, including maintenance of work vehicles and heavy equipment.
Responsibilities- Maintain and service work vehicles and heavy equipment (dump trucks, sanders, snow plows, bulldozers, compactor, front‑end loader, and backhoe).
- Operate and maintain a variety of light and heavy motor equipment.
- Operate and maintain power and hand tools, including jackhammers, chippers, and chainsaws.
- Perform manual labor incidental to operating equipment, such as street sweeping, snow plowing, sanding, patching roads, cleaning catch basins, maintaining sports fields, and removing debris.
- Participate in snow and ice removal operations.
- Perform highway construction and maintenance projects such as building, repairing, and patching streets and sidewalks; repairing guard rails, building fences and signs; trimming and mowing grass; removing trees and shrubs; fabricating, installing, and maintaining road signs.
- Adjust or repair power tools and equipment as needed to keep them operating safely and efficiently.
Class D Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s license at time of hire. Hoisting License (2A, 4E or 4G per 520 CMR 6.10) and CDL Class B with tanker endorsement required within two (2) years of date of hire.
Education and ExperienceMust have a High School diploma or equivalent and up to three (3) years of experience in grounds and roadway maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical RequirementsWork requires moderate intermittent physical strength and effort daily, such as lifting heavy objects, carrying, stacking or placing them in a vehicle or storage area, as well as pulling, pushing, standing, walking and a great deal of physical effort may be involved daily.
Motor skills include hand and eye coordination, finger dexterity and motor coordination to use a range of hand tools or department equipment, work in confined spaces, or climb a ladder in a safe manner.
Visual demands require reading and interpreting written instructions for general understanding. Color discrimination is not regularly required.
Knowledge, Abilities and SkillsKnowledge
:
Knowledge of landscaping tools, techniques and practices, maintenance of grounds and roadway maintenance and minor repairs; knowledge of the town’s street layout and landmarks; safe and effective operation of hand tools, light equipment and machinery; working knowledge of department operations.

:
Ability to adhere to safety precautions and to follow written and oral instructions in a safe and timely manner; ability to perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods; ability to interact effectively with co‑workers; ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure appropriate safety precautions; ability to carry out duties in busy, public congested areas.

:
Proficient mechanical and operating skill in the use of department hand tools and equipment required for the position.
