Position Summary
:
The Department of Public Works seeks qualified candidates to begin immediately in a full‑time Laborer role. Responsibilities include a range of skilled work such as collecting Town trash, roadside cleanup, mowing, operating equipment, and maintaining records under the direction of the General Foreman.

• Operate department equipment and vehicles (lawn mower, hand tools) to complete park projects such as tree trimming, brush cutting, grass mowing, planting, field maintenance, construction and installation of fences, and digging holes.
• Use hand tools to dig ditches and trenches, patch roadways, collect trash, and perform tasks around gas pipes, trees, wires, cars, and personal property.
• Attend required training sessions to stay current with occupational safety requirements and effective use of tools and equipment.
• Participate in the department’s ice and snow removal program.

• Valid Massachusetts driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment.
• High School diploma or equivalent, and up to one year of experience in grounds and roadway maintenance or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing 30 pounds or less.
• Manual dexterity and physical ability to perform outdoor labor in inclement weather.
• Class D Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s license at time of hire.

• Moderate intermittent physical strength and effort required daily; lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, standing, and walking for the full shift.
• Frequent exposure to noise, fumes, dust, and other elements as well as occasional work at heights or in confined spaces.
• Must follow safety precautions, wear appropriate protective clothing (hats, gloves, glasses, hard hats, safety boots), and recognize unsafe conditions.

Full‑time
; benefits available via AFSCME Union, M2 position. Starting hourly rate: $33.50 for new hires – $41.67 for employees with 12 years of service with the Town of Nantucket.
