Camp Counselor II – Recreation

STATUS:
Seasonal Full-Time, Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be needed approximately Mid-June to Mid-August. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

SALARY RANGE: $82.71-$92.71 / Daily Rate (per CA Labor Code 1182.4) – paid semi-monthly
Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the Light House’s purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The Light House is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEWThe recreation program area leader is responsible for preparing and implementing safe, fun, and appropriate programs for the blind and visually impaired children and adults. They will coordinate and oversee all camp recreational activities.

- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate
- Some college education preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
- Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
- Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
- Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred
- Recreation Program Leadership
- Plan, direct, and supervise a safe, engaging, and dynamic recreation program for campers.
- Lead and instruct classes and activities in designated recreation areas.
- Assess and evaluate the success of recreation programs, making improvements as needed.
- Safety & Staff Training
- Train staff on their responsibilities within recreation program areas, ensuring they provide proper supervision and instruction.
- Ensure that campers and staff follow safety procedures within recreation spaces.
- Assist counselors with the development of art kits for cabins or special events as necessary.
- Facility & Equipment Management
- Set up and maintain recreation areas, ensuring they are ready for all scheduled activities.
- Teach and monitor proper use of recreation equipment.
- Ensure the security and proper storage of recreation equipment when not in use.
- Conduct daily checks of the recreation area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
- Regularly inventory recreation supplies and ensure timely replacements.
- Camper & Staff Supervision
- Assist with camper placements in recreation programs and cabin assignments when necessary.
- Evaluate volunteers, Counselors-in-Training (CITs), and counselors throughout the summer, providing feedback to the Assistant Director.
- Step in as a camp counselor when necessary to support camper supervision.
- Camp Engagement & Collaboration
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing leadership and support as assigned.
- Help organize and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and all-camp activities.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Read, understand and adhere to 100% of agency policies and procedures
- Complete 100% of job responsibilities and assigned tasks efficiently by prioritizing work as needed to meet deadlines, ensuring safety, wellbeing and positive experience for campers.
- Consistently maintain a positive and respectful attitude in 100% of interactions with staff and campers while conducting ourselves professionally on and off the job as representatives of Light House.
- Consistently report to work on time and be ready to begin performing our assigned duties and responsibilities with no more than two exceptions per camp session.
- Work productively or stay engaged with campers during at least 95% of program activities, all camp activities, cabin time and all other time that is not designated as time off.
