Overview

Head counselors are responsible for overall coordination of male and female campers and program counselors in camp living quarters. They will assure proper camper counselor ratios in cabins and program areas. Head counselors assign cabin, bathroom, and laundry clean-up in lower camp. They are responsible for the provision of the camp experience to all campers within these areas: daily recreational activities, creating educational experiences, and promoting independence.

They will provide assistance at mealtimes, between and during classes, at special activities and through the evening.

Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • High School graduate
  • Some college education preferred
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications
  • Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
  • Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
  • Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred
Job Responsibilities
  • Housing & Staff Coordination
    • Assign camper living quarters in collaboration with the Camp Director and Assistant Director.
    • Assign staff to cabins, ensuring the appropriate staff to camper ratio in all cabins and program space.
    • Supervise and support the counselor team to ensure camper needs are met.
  • Scheduling & Supervision
    • Develop and implement schedules for evening cabin and area supervision.
    • Create a nights-off schedule for counselors and program area leaders.
    • Ensure camper-to-counselor ratios are maintained throughout all activities.
  • Facility & Safety Oversight
    • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and well-being in all residential areas (lower cabins, lakeside cabins, and the lodge).
    • Ensure sleeping and residential areas are stocked with necessary supplies.
    • Conduct orientation for campers, counselors, area leaders, and volunteers on residential policies, including laundry use, phone access, and other camp rules.
  • Communication & Team Support
    • Serve as the liaison between counselors and the Assistant Director.
    • Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings.
    • Maintain clear and positive communication with all camp staff.
  • Program & Camper Engagement
    • Assist in teaching classes and leading activities as needed.
    • Step in as a camp counselor when necessary.
    • Participate in staff training, camp orientation, and professional development.
