Camp Counselor III, Head of CIT, Volunteers, & Specialty Programs
REPORTS TO:
Director, Camp
STATUS:
Seasonal Full-Time, Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be needed approximately Mid-June to Mid-August. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

SALARY RANGE: $82.71-$92.71 Daily Rate (per CA Labor Code 1182.4) – paid semi-monthly
Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the Light House’s purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The Light House is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEWHead counselors are responsible for overall coordination of male and female campers and program counselors in camp living quarters. They will assure proper camper counselor ratios in cabins and program areas. Head counselors assign cabin, bathroom, and laundry clean‑up in lower camp. They are responsible for the provision of the camp experience to all campers within these areas: daily recreational activities, creating educational experiences, and promoting independence.
They will provide assistance at mealtimes, between and during classes, at special activities and through the evening.
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate
- Some college education preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
- Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
- Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
- Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred
- Housing & Program Assignments
- Coordinate with the Camp Director and Assistant Director to assign living quarters and program spaces for CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff.
- Supervision & Support
- Lead, supervise, and support CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff to ensure they have the necessary resources for successful programming.
- Monitor performance, provide feedback, and relay recommendations of CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff to the Assistant Director and Camp Director.
- Ensure CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff adhere to all policies and procedures during all camp activities.
- Facilities & Safety
- Oversee cleanliness, safety, and overall well‑being of campers and staff in all residential and program areas.
- Maintain supplies and enforce camp rules in living spaces.
- Training & Orientation
- Assist with CIT training during staff orientation and provide ongoing guidance leadership development with participants in the program.
- Conduct orientation for CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff at the start of each session, covering camp policies and expectations.
- Communication & Teamwork
- Serve as the liaison between CITs, volunteers, specialty staff, and the Assistant Director and Camp Director.
- Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff, CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff.
- Host daily check‑ins with CITs, volunteers, and specialty staff and attend all administrative and staff meetings.
- Program & Camper Engagement
- Ensure camper‑to‑counselor ratios are maintained throughout all activities.
- Support and participate in all camp activities, including classes, evening programs, special events, and overnights.
- Provide ongoing program ideas and assist in teaching when needed.
- General Camp Support
- Step in as a counselor when necessary.
- Participate in staff orientation, training, and professional development.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support camp operations.

- Complete 100% of job responsibilities and assigned tasks efficiently by prioritizing work as needed to meet deadlines, ensuring safety, wellbeing and positive experience for campers.
