Position Summary

Ameri Corps EXL offers a meaningful opportunity to support students' academic growth and personal development while being part of a dedicated team making a lasting impact in schools. Students are at the heart of our work. We are seeking proactive, adaptable, enthusiastic, and dedicated Ameri Corps EXL Mentors to support the academic and social‑emotional development of students in local area schools of Napa, California.

Program

Overview

Ameri Corps EXL Members serve within the Napa Expanded Learning (EXL) Program and/or the ACE After School Program to provide comprehensive academic, enrichment, and social‑emotional support to students. All students at the school site benefit from organized, collaborative games and positive conflict resolution support during recess and lunch. Students identified as needing additional support may be assessed and assigned target literacy or math tutoring services and/or placed in a social‑emotional mentoring group to help foster student success, connection, and overall well‑being.

Essential

Ameri Corps Duties
  • Active Recess: Structured and organized activities facilitated by adults to encourage students in games/sports while building conflict resolution skills during the core day and after school. Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors.
  • Tutoring Services: Provide individualized and small‑group academic support in subjects such as reading, writing, and math while helping students build confidence, engagement, and positive learning habits. Collaborate with teachers and school staff to support classroom learning goals, reinforce instructional strategies, and help create an encouraging and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Mentoring Services: Work with students who need additional support in skill development, relationship‑building, and personal growth. Lesson plans are created and implemented by the Mentor, utilizing the provided curriculum.
  • Expanded Learning & Enrichment Support: Support selected students beyond the classroom and outside the traditional school day through the school’s after‑school program, COOL School. Members are not traditional after‑school teachers or childcare staff, but rather enrichment and engagement leaders who create meaningful, hands‑on learning experiences while gaining exposure to different pathways within education and youth development.

Each member will be assigned to support a specific enrichment “track” within the after‑school program based on program needs and personal interests. Tracks may include areas such as:

  • Arts & Creative Expression
  • Sports & Athletics
  • STEAM & Hands‑On Learning
  • Leadership & Social Emotional Learning
  • Outdoor Education and Recreation
  • Academic Enrichment and more
What You’ll Gain as an EXL Youth Mentor
  • Build real‑world skills: Strengthen your leadership, communication, and youth development skills through hands‑on experience and ongoing training.
  • Grow professionally: Access professional development opportunities that help you stand out in careers like education, public service, and beyond.
  • Be part of something bigger: Participate in National Service events that connect you to your community and a larger purpose.
  • Flexible service experiences: Optional weekend service days available if you’re looking to deepen your impact.
Service Commitment
  • Part‑time, 10‑month commitment serving a minimum of 900 hours—may include some weekends and evenings, additional service events to fulfill the Ameri Corps contractual service expectations.
  • Hours:

Monday‑Friday 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Members are not expected to serve during school‑closed days according to the district calendar. Winter Break Intercession program is mandatory.
  • Service hours are expected to occur in‑person at school sites, and members are required to live within a reasonable commute…
