Role Overview

The Deputy Sheriff I Academy Graduate will execute law enforcement and crime prevention tasks, patrol assigned areas, enforce state and local laws, and conduct investigations of misdemeanor and felony crimes.

Veterans' Preference

Veterans’ preference will be applied by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol: Respond to calls for life and property protection, enforce County and State laws, direct traffic, detain drivers violating laws, issue citations, and make arrests as needed.
  • Investigations: Investigate major property and person crimes, conduct follow‑up investigations, gather evidence, conduct surveillance, locate and question witnesses, take statements, present information to the District Attorney, and appear in court.
  • Court Security: Maintain safety in the courtroom, serve as bailiff, transfer inmates, search entrants, monitor activities for safety concerns, and assist courtroom staff.
  • Civil: Serve legal papers (subpoenas, summons, warrants), prepare and maintain files, and perform related processing of misdemeanor and felony complaints.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school graduation required; completion of two years of college highly desired.
  • Experience: Minimum one year of professional law enforcement experience as a paid, full‑time Peace Officer in California.
  • Certification: Valid California POST Basic Certificate issued within the last three (3) years.
  • License: Valid California Driver’s License, maintained in good standing throughout employment.
  • Age and Availability: Minimum 21 years old; willing to work nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
  • Other: Ability to serve in Disaster Service Worker capacity when required by the County.
Additional Pay Incentives and Benefits
  • Hiring Bonus: Up to $30,000 signing bonus for qualifying former service members; paid in two installments based on term of service and probation completion.
  • Loan Forgiveness Program: Up to $20,000 (or $30,000 with certified bilingual status) toward qualifying student loans for employees with a minimum 60‑credit degree and five years of satisfactory service.
  • Employee Referral Bonus: $1,000 to current staff referring a successful candidate after one‑year probation.
  • Educational Reimbursement: Up to $1,500 per fiscal year for tuition and books related to job duties.
  • Bilingual Pay: Two percent premium of base salary for bilingual deputies.
Recruitment Process
