About the DepartmentThe Department of Planning, Building, & Environmental Services (PBES) partners with the community to promote health, safety and sustainability by providing development services that balance agricultural, environmental, and economic vitality. PBES divisions include Building, Code Enforcement, Engineering, Environmental Health, Natural Resources, Parks, Planning, and Staff Services.
The Environmental Health Division protects public health through state and local programs, including permitting and inspections of retail food facilities, public pools, employee housing camps, mobile home parks, small water systems, on-site wastewater systems, wells, groundwater permits, and facilities handling hazardous materials, as well as underground or above-ground storage tanks. The division also provides emergency response support and oversees cleanup of sewage and hazardous material releases, under the authority of the County Public Health Officer.

The current vacancy is a supervisor for the Solid Waste team.
The Environmental Health Supervisor serves as a first-line supervisor in the Environmental Health Division and is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and overseeing the County’s solid waste programs, including the Local Enforcement Agency (LEA), medical waste, body art, waste tire grant implementation, and related initiatives.
This position directs, coordinates, and monitors the work of assigned staff, consultants, vendors, and contractors. The Environmental Health Supervisor performs a wide range of professional, administrative, and programmatic duties in support of assigned programs, including serving as a liaison and providing high-level administrative support and staff assistance to County departments, boards, committees, and external agencies.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Has a vast knowledge of local, state, and federal waste management regulations to ensure compliance with applicable laws and mandates.
- Is experienced in budgeting and financial management with strong attention to detail.
- Has experience leading a team of or individuals in a specific program, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Accela.
- Ability to navigate a fluid landscape and communicate effectively with staff and management.
- Willing to lead the implementation of new health and safety guidelines across all areas under their purview.
- Determined to motivate, inspire, and encourage staff in a collaborative culture for team success.
- Strives for transparency and models accountability by serving the community and instilling strong customer service values within the team.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for preparing detailed permit applications, reports and providing policy recommendations.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience in environmental health and safety regulation and enforcement.
Note:
Possession of a master’s degree in Public Health, Environmental Health or other basic sciences may substitute for one year of the required experience. - Education: Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Public Health, Environmental Health, or other basic science, including courses in land use, solid waste management, occupational health and/or toxic substances.
