Senior Project Manager

Related AIA Position Description

Coordinates all project efforts to ensure effective execution, prepares strategic plans, and serves as primary client liaison. Estimates scope of work and oversees less experienced project managers. Handles the most complex projects of the largest magnitude. Responsible for coordination of all project efforts, administrative and technical, to ensure the most efficient and cost effective execution of assigned projects. Prepares strategic plans for project success.

Serves as the primary liaison with clients to complete projects on schedule, within budget, and with maximum client satisfaction. Actively manages clients budgets, schedules, and programs; project communications and documentation; office administrative tasks; and project team assignments. Estimates fees, determines scope of work, and prepares proposals and contracts on the most complex projects. Provides oversight and monitoring of work of less experienced project managers.

May act in a team leader capacity in the absence of the Principal Architect.

Compensation Alignment

Baseline compensation for this position will be aligned to the salaries listed for the Senior Project Manager position defined by the AIA Compensation Report for the California Region. Baseline salary ranges will be updated in alignment with the publication of this report. Final compensation for each employee will be determined based on skillset alignment with the position as described below as determined by the Studio Directors and Principal Architects.

This is an exempt position as defined by the state of California.

Studio Director – Principal Architect

Position Responsibilities
  • Responsible for ensuring the design intent is incorporated into detailed documentation and properly executed.
  • Ensures that documentation conforms to the best practice, quality control and assurance standards of the office while working closely with staff and principals.
  • Acts as the primary source for monitoring employee performance on a daily basis and take appropriate action to report both positive and negative performance.
  • Provide feedback for evaluations and meet with their personnel to discuss the evaluation.
  • Supervise and manage up to six team members for all phases of projects.
  • Coordinate with government agencies, utility companies, and resolve plan check and approval issues with the agencies.
  • Guide and direct project team and consultants for appropriate materials and systems.
  • Review documents for code compliance in all phases and issue code interpretations.
  • Review cost estimates and conduct value analysis.
  • Review and approve changes in collaboration with the project design team and client.
  • Supervise and resolve issues in preparation of construction documents and throughout the construction administration process.
  • Responsible for the completeness of the specifications.
Position Qualifications
  • Ten or more years of experience.
  • Licensure by the California Architects Board preferred but not required.
  • Degree from a NAAB-Accredited Architecture Program is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to professionally communicate both verbally and in writing to give assignments to office support staff, consultants, and vendors with respect.
  • Ability to apprise supervisor and client for status of work.
  • Establish productive working relationships, and deal effectively and cooperatively with clients, team members, consultants, and government agencies.
  • Display willingness to make decisions; exhibit sound and accurate judgment; support and explain reasoning for decisions; include appropriate people in decision-making process; make timely decisions.
  • Resolve issues related to team members and consultants.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to meet goals and objectives of project.
  • Coach, mentor, and provide performance-enhancing feedback to assigned team members.
