What We’re Looking For- Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.
- Participate in weekly trainings based on the needs of the Parks & Recreation Services Department.
- Successful candidates must be available June 8 - June 12 for our Mandatory Staff Training Week, in order to be eligible to work this summer.
- Possess valid certification(s) by the time of hire.

We’re offering multiple lifeguard certification classes this spring to help you get started. for more information. Applicants are encouraged to apply before obtaining certification. Additionally, applicants that participate in the City of Napa Lifeguard Training courses are eligible for partial refund after a full summer worked.
Part‑Time Extra Help positions are not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Temporary and part‑time employees are at‑will and not covered by the Civil Service System. Some benefits for temporary employees include sick leave, temporary employee retirement plan, and 3.5% bilingual pay if applicable.
TYPICAL TASKS- Works as a team with other lifeguards and swim instructors to ensure water safety.
- Assists in implementing emergency procedures in case of accident or injury.
- Monitors designated swim areas to ensure patron safety.
- Enforces policies and rules.
- Identifies and corrects hazardous conditions and unsafe practices.
- Develops and executes swim lesson plans for children and adults of all abilities.
- Completes and distributes swim progress reports; and providing excellent customer service to all patrons.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Ability to:
- Prepare clear, concise and complete written materials, such as educational and informational materials, reports and correspondence.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Represent the City with the general public.
- Respond to customer questions or problems.
- Provide courteous and positive customer service.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Demonstrate tact and diplomacy.
- Make sound independent decisions within procedural guidelines.
- Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates.
- Must be at least fifteen (15) years of age at time of application and have the ability to obtain a work permit.
- Some related work experience is desirable, such as working in recreation, sports, or a classroom environment; working with the public of all ages; or performing customer service, and record keeping duties.
- Previous participation in group sports, volunteer activities or a general interest working with youth is also desirable.
