Job Duties

Overview:
The new Speaking Center at NCC is available to provide students with one-on-one assistance in the preparation and delivery of individual and group presentations. Students can schedule a 30-minute session with trained student tutors for assistance with all parts of the public speaking process, including but not limited to the following:

* Topic selection

* Research

* Outlining

* Oral and written citations

* Introductions & conclusions

* Developing transitions

* Delivery (verbal & nonverbal)

* Visual Aids

* Communication Apprehension

* Group Presentations

* Developing Arguments

* Interviews

* Poster & Conference Presentations

Tutors will provide constructive feedback while following the assignment guidelines established by course instructors. Appointments are available during center hours each semester and can be scheduled online up to 2 hours in advance. Scheduling appointments early is strongly recommended to ensure there is ample time to edit and practice speeches between the time feedback is received at the Center and the assignment due date.

Cancellations must be made 12 hours in advance to allow other students to make appointments. Walk-in are available when tutoring slots are open.

Hours:

Monday - Thursday 10am-4pm, 7-9pm;
Friday 10am-4pm

Tutors

Responsibilities:

1. To provide one-on-one or group tutoring sessions in public speaking for undergraduate students that take place in Goldspohn Room 28 during Center hours.

2. To provide constructive and appropriate feedback by listening, reviewing and critically questioning student presentations (verbally and in writing).

3. To monitor and record student appointments.

4. To assist students in speech preparation without writing or creating the speech for them.

5. To communicate promptly in writing with students and the student's instructor regarding actions taken during the appointment.

6. To maintain excellent and professional communication with the director of the communication center.

7. To model academic and professional behaviors at the Center by demonstrating an enthusiastic attitude, adhering to tutoring guidelines, handling equipment appropriately, maintaining student confidentiality, and being prompt for appointments and Speaking Center deliverables.

Do the job duties for this position include any driving requirements? No Job Qualifications

* Communication Studies Faculty Recommendation

* Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

* Earned B+ or better in Public Speaking Courses demonstrating strong written, public and interpersonal communication skills (COM 100, CARD 102, COM 230, COM 287 or other intensive public speaking courses or demonstrated experience through other activities such as the speech team).

* Must be able to tutor at the Speaking Center for both the Fall and Spring semesters of the academic year and commit to working a minimum of 4 hours a week (for 2 hour slots)

* Complete the 6-8 hours of training prior to the beginning of the academic year (dates TBD, likely the week prior to the start of classes).
