GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled, technical inspections of new, existing, and altered buildings and structures in order to ensure conformity to local, state and regional building codes, ordinances and regulations.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs mechanical, plumbing and gas inspections: inspects new and existing residences, businesses, commercial and other structures for conformance with regulated safety and other requirements; documents compliance or non-compliance; conducts second inspections to ensure correction of previous violations.
  • Verifies documentation; checks permit numbers and approved plans on site to compare documented data to actual work performed; inspects pile caps, foundations, framing, roofs and roof diaphragms, tie beams, swimming pools, pool barriers, docks, mechanical change-outs, pool buildings, shutters, signs, plumbing, fire walls, fuel gas, awnings, irrigation systems, and rights of way.
  • Evaluates construction site maintenance; investigates complaints of defective projects; contacts responsible parties of defects; issues oral and or written instructions for correction; and conducts re-inspections as needed.
  • Consults with builders, owners, contractors and architects regarding building and structural problems; speaks with a variety of individuals during inspection process or by phone regarding modifications of plans/specifications/blueprints to bring about compliance with Florida building codes.
  • Inspects new and existing residence, business, commercial and other buildings and structures for conformance with regulated safety and other requirements of established state and regional codes, ordinances, and regulations; renders approval/disapproval of inspected sites regarding issuance of building permits or stop work orders.
  • Issues stop work orders for any construction without evidence of permits or licensure, or conducting activities in violation of established codes, ordinance and regulations.
  • Investigates complaints of defective projects which are reported; notifies responsible parties of defects, and issues oral and/or written instructions for correction.
  • Prepares daily and monthly records and reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, actions taken, and recommendations made for further action, as well as names of owners, builders and addresses of inspections.
  • Provides assistance and guidance to other City inspectors as needed.
  • Attends and participates in workshops, meetings, seminars, and/or training opportunities regarding certification, to acquire current industry knowledge, and to maintain current knowledge of regulatory developments.
