Fiber Network Design Engineer

The ISP Designer creates project designs, estimates costs, identifies appropriate materials and equipment, creates drawings, and estimates project timelines for the placement of fiber optic cables, copper cables, poles, conduit, transmission equipment, and associated electronics.

• Designs based on current and past network architectures, including concentration with as-builts.
• Uses consistent and independent discretion to ensure designs meet company requirements.
• Identifies aerial, buried, and underground design and construction methods including conduit, manholes, and hand holes, etc.
• Communicates requirements to drafting and encoding personnel for the generation of customers’ engineering work orders.
• Uses CAD and other software to develop engineering designs.
• Performs route analysis and develops aerial and underground fiber route maps.
• Verifies fiber and mapping activities.
• Maintains records of fiber splicing and topography.
• Develops mitigation and restoration procedures for emergency conditions such as fiber damage, power failures, and other disasters.
• Performs construction and maintenance of ISP infrastructure according to industry standards.
• Maintains safety and security of ISP facility.
• Determines scope, budget, and schedules for ISP projects.
• Monitors and controls expenses within the allotted budget.
• Communicates project status and updates and provides weekly reporting.
• Completes the assigned projects within the defined scope and timelines.
• Performs routine inspections of ISP networks.
• Collaborates with construction teams, including fiber splicers, to ensure fiber optic cables and new underground network facilities are aligned with company standards.
• Other duties as required or assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent; college‑level courses in AutoCAD drafting/CATV design or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years hands‑on/field experience designing and constructing outside plant copper and fiber optic cable (UG, aerial, buried, BICS) and manhole and conduit design.
• Strong background in fiber plant support services.
• Knowledge of permitting process.
• Must understand the underlying theories and concepts of broadband communication, including fiber optics and Metro Ethernet networks.
