6+ years of civil CAD design experience.
Strong candidates may have 8–12+ years of experience, depending on project complexity and leadership responsibilities.
The Senior CAD Designer is an experienced technical design professional responsible for producing, coordinating, and reviewing complex civil engineering construction plans. This position requires advanced knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, civil site design, plan production, CAD standards, and project coordination.
The Senior CAD Designer works closely with Project Managers, Engineers, CAD Managers, and design staff to develop complete, accurate, and constructible plans. This role may also mentor junior staff, assist with quality control, improve workflows, and help maintain company CAD standards.
Primary ResponsibilitiesLead CAD design and plan production for civil engineering projects.
Prepare and coordinate complex construction plan sets for land development, utility, roadway, grading, drainage, and site infrastructure projects.
Develop Civil 3D models including surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, feature lines, parcels, grading objects, and plan production sheets.
Review drawings for accuracy, consistency, constructability, and compliance with company and agency standards.
Coordinate design information between multiple disciplines, including survey, engineering, landscape architecture, permitting, and construction administration.
Interpret engineering direction and convert conceptual designs into detailed construction documents.
Identify design conflicts, missing information, and potential construction issues before plans are submitted.
Provide guidance and technical support to CAD Technicians and CAD Designers and assist with training, workflow improvements, CAD standards, templates, Civil 3D styles, and production procedures.
Coordinate xrefs, data shortcuts, sheet sets, plotting, plan revisions, and electronic deliverables.
Support project deadlines by organizing CAD production tasks and helping prioritize work.
Assist Project Managers with agency comment responses, permit revisions, quantity takeoffs, exhibits, and construction-related plan updates.
Typical TasksLeading the CAD production of full civil construction plan sets.
Building and managing proposed grading models.
Creating complex utility and drainage layouts.
Preparing plan and profile sheets for roads, utilities, and drainage systems.
Reviewing junior staff drawings before engineer or project manager review.
Coordinating revisions across large plan sets.
Resolving Civil 3D issues related to surfaces, pipe networks, labels, corridors, and data references.
Preparing detailed exhibits for clients, agencies, or construction coordination.
Helping develop or refine company CAD standards and production tools.
Training junior staff on drafting quality, Civil 3D workflows, and plan organization.
Required QualificationsAdvanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D
.
Strong understanding of civil engineering plan production.
Experience preparing complete construction plan sets with minimal supervision.
Ability to manage complex CAD files, xrefs, data shortcuts, sheets, and plotting workflows.
Strong knowledge of grading, utilities, drainage, roadway design, site layout, and construction documentation.
Ability to review plans for accuracy, consistency, and constructability.
Ability to mentor junior CAD staff and provide practical technical guidance.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to coordinate with Engineers, Project Managers, CAD staff, surveyors, and outside consultants.
Ability to work independently and make informed design-production decisions.
