Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing basic care to patients following established standards and practices.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Fulfilling patient care responsibilities as assigned, which may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow.
• Escorting patients to exam/procedure rooms. Observing, recording, and reporting patient observations and reactions to drugs and treatments to providers.
• Assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
• Collecting patient history including current medications, allergies, symptoms, etc.
• Providing patient care as directed by the provider; this may include screenings, treatments in accordance with established standards.
• Assisting providers with various procedures as needed.
• Documenting in the Electronic Medical Record and relaying information/instructions to patient/family. Documenting all interventions, phone calls, patient/family responses, medication dispensed or prescribed, hospital data.
• Answering patient phone calls and messages, acting as a communication liaison between the patient and provider.
• Assisting providers with casting, splinting, wound care, and DME fitting as directed by licensed provider.
• Fulfilling clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include filing or sending medical records to a patient or referral provider, appointment scheduling.
• Collection and handling of lab specimens following established standards and practices. Adhere to infection control safety guidelines, maintaining equipment, instruments, and stock supplies.
• Utilizing electronic referrals process to complete requested physician referrals to NCHMD specialists and ancillary services.

Education, experience, and qualifications:

• Minimum of High School or GED required.
• 1 year of Medical Assistant experience working in a clinical setting.
• Orthopedic experience preferred.
• AAOS ROT certificate preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Completion of Medical Assistant or practical nursing training program with documented clinical practicum hours; OR Medical Assistant certification; OR a minimum of one-year experience performing above duties in a medical office setting or medical capacity.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Verified ability to take accurate patient vital signs.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively articulate and explain required information to patients.
• Knowledge of CPT and ICD9 codes.
• Intermediate computer knowledge:
  Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
• Knowledge of basic and specialty specific medical terminology.
• Capable of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining a professional demeanor and control.
• Ability to work with in a team environment and willingness to assist with multiple providers during the clinic day.
