EKG Technician

The EKG Technician acquires EKGs, application of Holter monitors and operation of the EKG management system including the editing process. Follows infection control guidelines. Performs all office duties including answering the phone, completing departmental paperwork, filing, test resulting and conducting front office duties. Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures as well as assists with the hospital and departmental performance improvement plan.

Trains new personnel.

Within 90 days of hire, the EKG tech must show competency in the following areas: performing advanced testing and patient monitoring procedures to include preparing patients for event monitoring, Holter monitoring, mobile telemetry monitoring, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. The EKG tech will assist in routine, echo, and nuclear stress tests, monitoring the patient for blood pressure and equipment function during stress testing as well as assisting the physician during the stress test procedure.

The EKG tech will have a thorough knowledge of the stress computer system as well as advanced EPIPHANY applications. The tech will have the ability to perform EPIPHANY troubleshooting procedures and to act as charge in the absence of the Lead Tech or the Director. The EKG technician will be able to scan Holter monitor tests and prepare a report for physician interpretation.

Completes special assignments as required. Requires minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Knowledgeable on basic troubleshooting procedures for the EPIPHANY system.
  • Demonstrates competency in performing exercise, stress echo and nuclear stress testing.
  • Demonstrates competency in operating the Holter Monitor system, scanning Holter tests, recognizing cardiac arrhythmias and preparing physician reports.
  • Properly retrieves and files medical records and ensures patient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of transmitting EKG files and being able to troubleshoot the MUSE and communication modems.
  • 12 Lead EKG: utilizes accurate lead placement, acquires artifact free tracings.
  • Holter, event monitor, mobile telemetry and ambulatory blood pressure hook up: clean tracings/readings, patient education and appropriate lead placement.
  • On a routine basis, edits EKG reports in the EPIPHANY system and prepares reports as required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to look up patient information in Power chart for clinical purposes.
  • Documentation all patient information accurately in the EPIPHANY and stress systems
  • Communicates with patients, families, employees and physician staff using verbal and written skills.
  • Time Management: completes all work within the shift and assists others as necessary.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of High School or GED required
  • Previous experience preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge:
    Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows
