Job Summary

The Clinical Technician at the Operating Room (HSS) provides support for the OR by transporting patients, assisting with positioning, turning over and cleaning rooms, stocking supplies, and delivering direct patient care under the direction of a nurse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform, assist, reinforce, and deliver patient care under direction of a nurse.
  • Multi‑task and maintain a timely, thorough cleaning of operating suites between cases.
  • Clean specialized surgical equipment and physiological monitoring equipment after each procedure according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Apply principles of standard precautions, safely disposing of blood and bio‑waste after each procedure.
  • Maintain and stock supplies and equipment, including IV fluids, throughout the shift.
  • Deliver laboratory specimens (urine, blood, sputum, stool) and correctly identify and document frozen sections, microbiology, and cytology specimens.
  • Perform EKG, input data into the machine, and present results to the attending physician.
  • Instruct and reinforce appropriate patient care activities under nurse direction.
  • Respond promptly to all requests and pages from peri‑operative areas.
  • Recognize and perform emergency measures including CPR when indicated.
  • Maintain annual competency in patient‑specific procedures.
  • Document accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Report pertinent patient changes to the primary care partner.
  • Insert and remove indwelling urinary catheters under nurse direction.
  • Assist staff with patient positioning and transfers; identify patients by armband and report any transport delays to charge nurse.
  • Co‑sign blood release forms after verification and transport blood to the appropriate suite.
  • Perform housekeeping duties to maintain cleanliness and order in the department.
  • Return equipment to the appropriate area after use; clean and prepare patient stretchers and beds as needed.
  • Maintain the schedule board and utilize downtime to wipe down equipment and clear hallways.
  • Meet and exceed expectations of patients and other customers served.
  • Assist departmental activities to ensure operational and salary expenses match or stay below the approved budget; seek process improvement opportunities.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association required.
  • Must satisfy one of the following:
    • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) with current State of Florida licensure and at least 1 year full‑time CNA experience in a skilled nursing facility or hospital, or a new graduate CNA with state licensure from an accredited program.
    • Registered Nursing (RN) student who has completed a nursing fundamentals or caring scholar course and is actively enrolled in an RN program, providing transcripts each semester.
    • Graduate of an RN program pending NCLEX authorization (up to four months to sit for NCLEX) or awaiting a second test (up to four months for RN licensure).
    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic with current valid Florida licensure and required work experience.
