The City of Napoleon has an immediate opening for a full-time Law Director. Candidates must be admitted and licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and have a minimum of three (3) years’ experience, including criminal and traffic trial experience. A valid driver’s license is required. This is a full-time position with a starting annual salary of $85,000 - $110,000 depending on experience.

Serves as Chief Officer of the Civil Division, Criminal and Traffic Divisions of the City Law Department; and plans, directs and implements activities of the City Prosecutor's Office doing related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Hire, fire, direct and evaluate employees; sets pay rate for employees within the department.
- Provide legal advice and counsel on all civil matters in which the City is concerned for the City Council and for all commissions, departments and offices thereof in matters relating to their official duties.
- Provide, in writing, all ordinances, resolutions and other legislation which the body of City Council may request.
- Prepare all contracts and other written instruments in which the City may be concerned and the City Manager and/or body of City Council may request.
- Render opinions, either verbally or in writing, to inquires by officers of the City who entertain doubts concerning the law in any matter before them relating to their official duties.
- Perform all duties and functions concerning civil matters imposed upon city solicitors, city attorneys or city law directors by the laws of the State of Ohio.
- Prosecute all cases brought before the Municipal Court for criminal and traffic offenses, occurring within the City or in unincorporated areas within the territory of the Court, as required.
- Thorough knowledge of Ohio Law including the City of Napoleon Ordinances.
- Ability to prepare cases for filing in court and prosecuting them to a conclusion including the handling of motions and trials.
- Ability to prepare briefs and argue cases in the Court of Common Pleas, as may be required, and in the Court of Appeals in the Supreme Court of Ohio.
- Ability to instruct subordinates, if any and clerical assistants.
- Ability to exercise good judgement
- A Doctorate of Jurisprudence Degree and admitted and licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the practice of law, including criminal and traffic trial experience and preparation of trial and appellate pleadings and briefs.
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Must be able to understand, carry out and direct complex oral and written directions.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThis job must be performed on-site, unless otherwise directed.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSThe Law Director shall establish residence Henry County or an adjacent county within 180 days of employment.
